Facebook's data center playbook has long been to design in-house and give the specs away: the Open Compute Project it seeded grew into a major force in data center hardware with hundreds of companies — including HP, Foxconn, and Goldman Sachs — building from its designs, and its earlier 6-pack modular switch already put an open-source switching platform on the market.
The Fabric Aggregation Layer extends that playbook up the stack: as Facebook's own workloads grow — including ML training on servers like the Big Basin GPU server it contributed to Open Compute — the network fabric connecting those machines becomes the scaling bottleneck, and Facebook is answering by donating the architecture itself rather than keeping it proprietary.
