Intel says upcoming 8th-gen Xeon and Core CPUs have been redesigned to provide hardware protection against Spectre variant 2 and Meltdown vulnerabilities

This is Intel making good on a promise: back in late January, the CEO said chips with built-in Meltdown and Spectre protections were coming this year (that January pledge), and the 8th-gen Xeon and Core redesign is the first concrete delivery. The distinction matters because until now, mitigation lived in microcode and OS patches layered onto vulnerable silicon.

The redesign also lands mid-arc in a longer security story: months later, researchers would detail Foreshadow, a speculative-execution flaw in Intel's secure enclaves that arrived even after microcode fixes — evidence that silicon-level fixes address known variants, not the underlying class of bug.

First-order effects

  • Buyers of the upcoming 8th-gen Xeon and Core parts get Meltdown and Spectre variant 2 protection in hardware, removing the performance tax of software and microcode mitigations on existing chips.

Second-order effects

  • Data-center operators face a sharper refresh calculus: patched older Xeons run slower than protected new ones, so the fix becomes a reason to upgrade rather than just a patch cycle.

Third-order effects

  • Security shifts from post-hoc patching to an architecture-design requirement — a trajectory visible in Intel later launching a Core vPro line explicitly marketed on hardware-based security for enterprises (the 2021 vPro launch), even as researchers keep finding new speculative-execution variants faster than silicon can retire them.

The trend: Speculative-execution vulnerabilities are pushing CPU vendors to move security from firmware patches into chip architecture itself, making hardware hardening a standing design constraint and selling point.

    Apparently Intel is planning to ship uArch fixes for Spectre variant 2 (branch target injection) and Meltdown... later this year? http://newsroom.intel.com/... the ECOs must have been flying fast and hard also, betting pool for what else they broke in the process, anyone? :P

    Brian Krzanich confirms that both Cascade Lake and the 8th gen CPUs that will launch in H2'18 will feature hardware mitigations for Variant 2 and 3. That's swift action from Intel, congrats. So much for those articles that said hardware mitigations would start with 10nm/Icelake. …
