Qualcomm opened this front first: its CEO committed to a Windows 10 PC running the Snapdragon 835 in late 2017, putting ARM silicon inside Microsoft's laptop ecosystem for the first time and directly threatening Intel's core PC franchise. By January 2018, Microsoft and Qualcomm had lined up 18 major carriers to support those Always Connected machines, making the connectivity story real rather than theoretical.

Intel's answer is to co-opt the category instead of ceding it: partnering with Microsoft, Dell, Lenovo, and HP to ship 5G-connected Windows 10 PCs on Intel silicon next year.
