Instagram announces plan to bring Carousel Ads to Stories, letting advertisers show up to three photos or videos in Stories

It's been less than a year since Instagram brought advertising to Instagram Stories — a format that its owner Facebook said in November has more than 300 million daily users.

Context & Ripple Effects

Instagram has been assembling this product for years: it introduced multi-photo carousel ads with clickable links in the feed in 2015, extended the swipe-through mechanic to video carousels of three to five slides in 2016, and opened carousels to all users in early 2017. Meanwhile, Stories went from an unmonetized clone to an ad surface within five months of launch, when Instagram committed to full-screen, skippable Stories ads at 150M daily users.

Today's move merges the two tracks: the carousel unit, already proven in-feed, is being ported into Stories just as Facebook cited more than 300 million daily Stories users in November. The significance is that Instagram is no longer inventing new ad formats for Stories — it is recycling its highest-performing feed inventory into its fastest-growing surface.

First-order effects

  • Advertisers gain a single Stories placement carrying up to three photos or videos, letting brands that already produce feed carousels repurpose that creative for Stories without new format work.
  • Instagram increases effective ad inventory per Stories impression, since each carousel slot sells multiple frames where a single-image ad previously ran.

Second-order effects

  • Snap, whose Discover and Stories ad business competes for the same full-screen vertical budgets, faces a rival whose ad units now match its immersive format while backed by Facebook's larger advertiser base.
  • Agencies and creative shops shift production toward modular multi-frame assets designed once and deployed across both feed and Stories placements, concentrating spend with Instagram over platforms offering only single-frame units.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds, Stories stops being a secondary surface and becomes Instagram's primary monetization canvas, with feed formats progressively migrated into full-screen vertical placements — a structure that pressures every social platform to maintain a Stories-equivalent ad product or cede brand budgets.

The trend: Social platforms are converging on full-screen vertical story formats and scaling their monetization by porting proven feed ad units into them rather than building new ones.
