Memo by a NSC official that's circulating in the Trump administration proposes government pay for and build a nationwide 5G network in 3 years to fend off China

Trump national security officials are considering an unprecedented federal takeover of a portion of the nation's mobile network …

In said Axios report: “There'll be a fierce debate inside the Trump administration — and an outcry from the industry — over the next 6-8 months over how such a network is built and paid for.” http://twitter.com/...

I am all for a rollout of better wireless broadband, but 2 things: 1. China isn't the one who I've been protecting my communications from. (Hint: It's MY government) 2. Pushing 5G to enhance privacy while proposing an encryption back door = Irony. http://www.reuters.com/...

A telecom policy wonk just told they're still processing, but: “That's the craziest story I think I've ever seen.”

It just doesn't pass the sniff test - if the threat is Chinese equipment vendors, how does nationalizing the network do anything regulating private carriers doesn't?
  • @stevekovach Steve Kovach on x
“In the memo, the Trump administration likens it to “the 21st century equivalent of the Eisenhower National Highway System” and says it would create a “new paradigm” for the wireless industry by the end of Trump's current term.” https://twitter.com/...

This is a good story but I don't think the fact that one China hawk on the NSC wrote a memo along these lines really means the Trump administration is considering it. https://www.axios.com/...

AT&T responds to @axios report on Trump admin weighing federal takeover of 5G network, says private sector work on 5G “already well down the road” http://www.axios.com/...

Trump officials are considering an unprecedented federal takeover of a portion of the nation's mobile network to guard against China, according to sensitive documents obtained by Axios. http://www.axios.com/...

Nationalisation, to protect against Commies. Oh boy, sign me up for this debate!! http://twitter.com/...

If the govt is gonna build out and run 5g can we hold them responsible for every cyber attack using that backbone? Call me cray but I trust AT&T more.
  • @tomkrazit Tom Krazit on x
Really hard to believe they could pull this off, but yikes. The NSA's job gets a lot easier if they own the network. http://twitter.com/...

Also 1. China has multiple carriers so uh what and 2. The US was first to widespread LTE deployment because of our model, why would that fall apart now? This whole thing is very stupid.

I'm very much looking forward to the government rolling out a high-speed 5G network — ETA is right after the completion of California's high-speed rail. So... 2088. http://twitter.com/...

Reuters confirms outlines of @axios scoop, but idea said to be still 6-8 months from reaching president's consideration. “We want to build a (5G) network so the Chinese can't listen to your calls,” a senior administration official said. http://www.reuters.com/...

Kudos to @axios ! For background, our story from earlier this month about the U.S. government pressuring AT&T to not use cell-tower equipment and sell smartphones from China's Huawei, even though their stuff is often cheaper and better, over spy fears. https://www.wsj.com/...
  • @stuwoo Stu Woo on x
This would be gigantic and really explains how gravely the U.S. fears the rise of Huawei (and ZTE to a lesser extent). AT&T and Verizon are not going to be happy about this. https://twitter.com/...
  • @mattyglesias Matthew Yglesias on x
This is a good story but I have a very hard time imagining this idea really coming to fruition. http://www.axios.com/...

Slide deck and a memo produced by a senior National Security Council official proposing creation of a single centralized 5G network! http://www.axios.com/... It is almost af if this person is clueless that distributed, decentralized and redundant networks are a superior defense.

@axios Immediate political issue here: White House has been arguing that net neutrality is “govt takeover of Internet.” How would that square w/ nationalized 5G network.
