Google quietly updates design of Gboard for iOS to make the GIF creation feature more accessible

Hey, Dieter  —  Gboard, Google's iOS and Android keyboard app, has quietly updated its design by moving its GIF-making button up next to the word suggestion bar.

The Verge Dami Lee

Context & Ripple Effects

Gboard started in 2016 as a search box inside the keyboard — web results, places, and GIF lookup without leaving the app you're typing in. Since then Google has kept widening its scope on both platforms, adding voice typing and more languages to the iPhone version last year while the Android build gained instant translation and automatic emoji/GIF suggestions.

The quiet move of the GIF-making button up beside the word suggestion bar is a small layout change with a clear signal: after shipping conversation-aware GIF and sticker suggestions on Android in November, Google is now pushing creation — not just retrieval — to the front of the iOS keyboard.

First-order effects

  • iOS users can start making a GIF in one tap from the suggestion bar instead of digging through menus, putting creation on equal footing with word prediction in Gboard's most valuable screen real estate.

Second-order effects

  • Giphy, which just shipped a sticker-making tool and keyboard extension for faster sharing on iOS, now faces Google competing for the same creation-first keyboard slot rather than only surfacing Giphy-hosted clips.

Third-order effects

  • If the pattern holds across both platforms, keyboards stop being passive text-input utilities and become lightweight media-creation surfaces, with Google and Giphy fighting over who owns the make-and-share loop at the point of typing.

The trend: Mobile keyboards are being repositioned from search-and-insert helpers into first-party content-creation surfaces, with Google moving Gboard toward that role on iOS.
