Gboard has been accumulating machine-learning features for two years: it launched in 2016 as an iOS app for searching the web, GIFs, and places from the keyboard (the original GBoard debut), then reached Android with instant translation and automatic emoji and GIF suggestions in March 2017. Two weeks before this announcement, Google added "Emoji Minis," ML-generated stickers built from users' selfies, showing the keyboard was already a generative surface rather than a static one.
