Dash began as a physical gimmick: the original $4.99-style hardware buttons for Prime staples were then given away free as Amazon expanded them to more brands, effectively subsidizing placement of its buy flow in consumers' homes. In 2016 Amazon proved the hardware could be repurposed as a general trigger with the programmable AWS IoT Button, and in early 2017 it moved the concept onto the site itself with virtual Dash buttons on the homepage.

Today's Virtual Dash Button Service is the logical next step: instead of Amazon deciding where the button lives, any third-party device maker gets a kit to embed one-click reordering inside its own products. That turns Dash from an Amazon-controlled merchandising slot into a distribution layer other companies build on.
