Intel's retreat comes less than a year after the Wi-Fi Alliance began certifying 802.11ad as a shipping standard, making the company one of the earliest large silicon vendors to pull back from general-purpose WiGig hardware even as it keeps the technology alive for one application: wireless VR.

The move extends a visible pruning run at Intel. In recent months it has killed the Edison, Joule, and Galileo compute modules along with the Recon eyewear line in a single cull of its maker and wearable bets, shut down wireless-charging work two years after abandoning that effort entirely, and discontinued its own Developer Forum while citing a shift from a PC-centric to a data-centric company. Peripheral connectivity is now clearly on the wrong side of that filter.

  • OEMs and board designers who built products around Intel's 802.11ad silicon lose their supplier as shipments cease, forcing them to requalify against whatever other certified parts the market offers.
