Intel to offer Thunderbolt 3 protocol specification to chipmakers royalty free starting next year and integrate Thunderbolt into its CPUs

Nearly two years ago, Intel gave a major boost to Thunderbolt, its zippy hardware interface, by embracing USB-C, the do-it-all port that will eventually eat the world.

Intel's 2017 decision caps a deliberate two-step opening of Thunderbolt. The first step came in 2015, when Thunderbolt 3 adopted the USB Type-C connector and doubled bandwidth to 40Gbps, aligning the proprietary interface with the port the industry was already standardizing on.

Making the protocol royalty free and moving it into the CPU removes the last two barriers — licensing cost and extra silicon — that kept Thunderbolt a premium feature on select machines. The payoff shows up years later: by 2020 Intel is detailing Thunderbolt 4 with USB4 compatibility across mainstream laptops, and by 2023 Thunderbolt 5 pushes bandwidth to 120Gbps.
