Intel's Compute Card is the second act in its small-form-factor experiment: after the HDMI-dongle Compute Stick launched at $149 in 2015 and got a faster, pricier Atom/Core M refresh in 2016, Intel is now moving to a credit-card-sized module meant to be slotted into all-in-one PCs and smart TVs rather than plugged into a display port. The pitch is versatility — laptop-level CPU in a 94.5x55x5mm package that any device maker can build around.

The arc that follows is instructive: Intel filled in the details five months later with Celeron N3450 and Core i5-7Y57 options at $140–$450, but by early 2019 it had confirmed it would not develop new Compute Card products — making this announcement the start of a product line that lived barely two years.

  • Device makers building all-in-one PCs and smart TVs gain a drop-in compute module option, letting them design around a standard Intel slot instead of integrating motherboards themselves.
