The story behind the story

Valve says the company is “no longer manufacturing” its high-end, PC-tethered VR headset Valve Index, released in 2019 for $999, after unveiling the Steam Frame

While showing its new Frame VR headset to The Verge, Valve confirmed that it's moving on from its previous one.

The Verge Jay Peters

Context & Ripple Effects

Valve entered VR hardware through its HTC Vive partnership and later positioned the Index as a premium, PC-dependent system; a contemporaneous review highlighted its improved display, field of view, and controllers alongside its $999 price and PC requirement. The newly announced Steam Frame’s ability to stream from a PC or run games locally gives Valve a broader technical proposition than that earlier setup.

The manufacturing decision makes the product transition concrete rather than merely adding another headset to Valve’s lineup. It also follows a hardware history in which Valve has discontinued products when it moves beyond an earlier platform, including the end of Steam Controller production.

First-order effects

Second-order effects

  • The Steam Frame becomes Valve’s sole stated forward VR hardware path, concentrating its product messaging around both PC streaming and local game execution rather than a dedicated tethered headset.
  • Rivals and VR developers targeting premium PC setups will have less reason to treat a newly sold Index as a continuing hardware baseline; compatibility priorities may increasingly center on newer, more flexible headset designs.

Third-order effects

  • If Valve’s transition holds, VR product competition may shift from selling a single high-spec tethered peripheral toward owning a broader software-and-device pathway across PC streaming and local execution.
  • The change illustrates how platform owners can use hardware refreshes to redefine the complementary assets—distribution, operating environments, and game access—that differentiate a headset, not just its specifications.

The trend: VR hardware is moving toward more versatile, platform-linked devices that combine PC access with standalone computing rather than relying solely on premium tethered designs.

I've had some people ask if I will buy Stream Frame aka Valve Deckard and why if the potential audience will be less than Meta Quest so here's my thoughts.  Yes I will absolutely buy it.  I've been told it won't be cheap so I'm expecting $799-$999.  [...] I worry about the captur…

Unpopular opinion: while the #SteamFrame is super-cool, I don't think it will make a big impact on the #VirtualReality ecosystem.  You can find my analysis here: [link] Long story short: Frame is too expensive, too dedicated to gaming, and it introduces no disruptive features to …

Steam Frame is an excellent headset for wirelessly playing PC VR games. But I'm extremely skeptical of the idea that it's the ideal headset for playing flatscreen games. https://www.uploadvr.com/...

As someone who has basically every headset...this seems like the perfect headset. PC VR is truly the best VR by a mile. And Steam Frame is a VR PC. And it's wireless! Add that it doubles as a Steam Deck with a portable giant screen? This'll be hard for anyone to beat.
  • @heaney555 David Heaney on x
This is indeed misleading. It's the experience people expect, in the age of Quest 3 and Apple Vision Pro, but it's not what Steam Frame offers. That the marketing person here knows it's what people want says a lot.

So Quest 3 with eye tracking but without OLED and zero first-party games. Another headset without AAA VR games. I'm already waiting for ambassadors and influencers to make sad videos that this headset is dead, just like they treated PSVR2 for the last 2 years 😆

When Meta, Apple, Google, and now Valve are all competing for our attention when just a couple years ago Meta had a veritable monopoly on the consumer space, the industry is in a very very good place.

I'm glad Steam Frame is finally out of the bag.  However, I'm a lot less excited than I thought I'd be.  On looks alone, they did a nice job.  It looks comfort-first, too.  For < $600 USD, I'd be interested.  Funnily enough, it's basically the original Oculus headset mock-up.  🤓

I think this part in the video looks a bit misleading. Steam Frame doesn't have a color mixed reality mode. The headset only has monochrome cameras for tracking. [video]

There are two non-standard user-accessible ports on Frame.  The top one carries power, audio, and USB data.  The bottom one (hidden under the nose bridge) is a PCIe gen 4 interface which Valve says can support dual 2.5Gbps video feeds, which seems intended mostly for third-party …
