Amazon Sues Perplexity Over ‘Agentic’ Shopping Tool

Jeff Bezos is an investor in Perplexity but Amazon has blocked Perplexity's Comet AI Browser from making purchases on its platform. The AI game keeps going.

Interesting: Amazon issues cease-and-desist to Perplexity, demanding its Comet AI agent stop making online purchases. CEO Aravind Srinivas says he sees no need to distinguish a user from an agent : agents should have “all the same rights and responsibilities” as humans.

worth watching how this plays out. will likely set a near term trend for agentic experiences related: curious how cloudflare shows up in all of this given their new agent token model personally, i hope the agents win and are allowed to freely wander / use the net

Amazon should not get to decide what browser I use

This is one of the first examples of what's sure to become a bigger battle around how much freedom AI agents should have to use the web on a user's behalf

Agentic commerce is a mirage. https://mobiledevmemo.com/...

exactly as I predicted. we aren't creating agentic superhighways. we are creating agentic ghettos.

“Amazon's a company that we've actually taken a lot of inspiration from,” but “I don't think it's customer centric to force people to use only their assistant, which may not even be the best shopping assistant.” @AravSrinivas told me

Interesting roadblock for Agentic Commerce. OpenAI has approached this in a different way with shared payment tokens that put the purchase decision firmly in the hands of the human user, but harness agentic commerce protocols.

The AI agent economy is going to create chaos on so many levels.

@eric_seufert Seems like “always bet against Perplexity” is also a good strategy

This will be an interesting development for “Agentic Commerce”. $AMZN wants users to see adverts and make choices based on them. Will they create a walled garden in the future? Agents are not impulsive and therefore don't care about adverts. Perplexity argues that humans are [ima…

Amazon: AI AI AI AI AI AI AI—wait no not like that. Pretty rich for *Amazon* to blame others for “a degraded shopping experience.” [image]

Manus also got blocked from Amazon back in June with legal warnings. Never figured out why but now I see.

Perplexity is right. If stores can't choose your personal shopper, why should they choose your AI? Perplexity is just letting people use AI how they want. Amazon's move feels more like fear than fairness. #Perplexity #Amazon #AIAgent https://decrypt.co/...

Now this is an interesting development. One, it shows @Amazon is taking the threat from chatbots becoming ecommerce plays seriously. Two, on what legal basis does Amazon seek a cease-and desist? Would they also be able to forestall me using a price comparison site? What

Is this a good thing for brands that are building websites specifically for agentic bots? Impact on ad dollars if one can't distinguish AI from human?

NEW: Amazon sent a cease and desist to Perplexity demanding it stop letting allowing its AI browser agent, Comet, to make purchases online for users. Perplexity is pushing back, accusing Amazon of bullying a smaller competitor and limiting user choice. https://www.bloomberg.com/.…

It's super obvious agentic commerce isn't going to happen. There's this but also Imagine the return rates. The credit card charge backs . The customer service calls. Until we rebuild the web for bots it's not going to happen. And we won't do that

  • @itsohqay @itsohqay on x
@perplexity_ai They're just afraid of losing upsells and impulse purchases, but once they “partner” with an agent that lets them control what's recommended, then it's A-okay. Seems a bit hypocritical Amazon 🧐 [image]

Amazon to hot startup: stop making purchases on my web site.* https://www.bloomberg.com/... *but AI, so it's all a little strange.

We would be happy to work together with Amazon to figure out a win-win outcome for both us and them. But attempts to block our Comet Assistant on Amazon and hurt our users — we will have to stand up for them and not get bullied by Amazon. https://www.perplexity.ai/...

Wrote about Perplexity's comical flouting of every other website's rules and insistence that it is being “bullied” https://www.platformer.news/ ...  [image]

Does an agent have rights? Does an agent have the right to shop? This is a major issue in the future of agentic commerce on AI platforms. Ironically, Amazon equips its own users with agentic assistance, but only within Amazon's walled garden.
  • @beejoli Beejoli Shah on x
I've spent more money on Amazon using an AI assistant than I do normally, because I get out of “frantically reading every review” and actually making a purchase much faster. The Comet Assistant never completes an action without my approval. But sure, let's block AI assistants.
  • @friedmandave Dave Friedman on x
Think this will become a big issue. A given platform has no incentive to let another platform's ai agents access it. We will need some sort of ai agent clearinghouse, akin to visa or swift or ACH to act as a tollbooth to allow these platforms to pay for access to other platforms.
  • @peterdedene Peter Dedene on x
Isn't Bezos one of the early investors in Perplexity? It appears Amazon is just upset that other companies are innovating more quickly.
  • @ruidiaox Rui Diao on x
@perplexity_ai It's possible that AI assistants are negatively impacting Amazon's business model, particularly advertising. I'm confident that a better business model can be found through collaboration, as the opportunities in AI are substantial enough for both companies to succe…
  • @perplexity_ai @perplexity_ai on x
We believe every user has the right to use the AI of their choice. Amazon wants to block Comet users from using AI assistants to shop on their platform, and they are now using legal threats to do so. But we will not be intimidated. https://www.perplexity.ai/...
