Dario Amodei addresses “inaccurate claims” about Anthropic's policy stances after David Sacks said the “real issue” is “Anthropic's agenda to backdoor Woke AI”

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei addressed “inaccurate claims” about the artificial intelligence …

CNBC Ashley Capoot

Context & Ripple Effects

The dispute escalates a policy clash already visible in Sacks's accusation that Anthropic uses safety arguments for regulatory capture and coverage of Amodei's opposition to a more hands-off AI agenda. Anthropic's response makes the conflict less about a single policy proposal than about the motives assigned to the lab's safety position.

The exchange also drew a public defense from Reid Hoffman, who characterized Anthropic as one of the good actors. That split illustrates how AI-policy arguments are becoming reputational contests among industry figures as well as debates over rules.

First-order effects

  • Anthropic and Amodei must spend public attention rebutting an allegation that its policy advocacy is ideological, rather than simply advancing their preferred safety approach.
  • Sacks's criticism puts Anthropic's policy positions and the credibility of its safety rationale under sharper political scrutiny.

Second-order effects

  • Other AI labs advocating safeguards may face pressure to distinguish technical-risk arguments from commercial or ideological interests, particularly after Amodei's criticism of the hands-off AI agenda became part of the public record.
  • Supporters and critics can increasingly use public endorsements and accusations to frame which labs are legitimate participants in policy debates, raising the communications cost of safety advocacy.

Third-order effects

  • If this pattern persists, AI governance may be shaped as much by competing claims of political alignment and institutional legitimacy as by disagreement over model-risk policy.
  • The durable divide is likely to be between labs seeking to establish credibility with policymakers and critics who portray that engagement as self-serving; the outcome will depend on whether claims can be tied to concrete policy choices.

The trend: AI-safety policy is becoming a contest over the political legitimacy of the labs seeking to influence it.

Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei has written a statement on Anthropic's commitment to American AI leadership. This is in response to the comments made yesterday by AI Czar David Sacks to Reid Hoffman. [image]

Follows the @reidhoffman vs. @DavidSacks public feud on X, in which Hoffman, a vocal Dem donor and backer, said Anthropic was one of the “good guys” of AI (along with OpenAI, MSFT) and Sacks, a Trump Admin official and backer, said it had a “Woke AI” agenda...

Without mentioning @DavidSacks, Anthropic's @DarioAmodei is out with a blogpost on the “recent uptick in inaccurate claims about Anthropic's policy stances” https://www.anthropic.com/...

Our position has been consistent: AI will deliver enormous benefits and should be developed thoughtfully. We share the administration's goals of maximizing those benefits, managing risks, and advancing America's lead in AI. A statement from our CEO: https://www.anthropic.com/...

Shows you didn't read the post (not shocked). When you are ready to have a professional conversation about AI's impact on America, I'm here to chat. Also: crying “lawfare and dirty tricks” is particularly rich, given the Trump Administration's recent actions.

1/ I want to state plainly: in all industries, especially in AI, it's important to back the good guys. Anthropic is one of the good guys. More thoughts about why we need to fuel innovation and talk safety at the same time:

Narrator: Anthropic downloaded 7 million books that they knew were pirated.

@DavidSacks thank you for keeping us informed about the Woke AI Backdoor david

    Truth.
  • @reidhoffman Reid Hoffman on x
Some other labs are making decisions that clearly disregard safety and societal impact (e.g. bots that sometimes go full-fascist) and that's a choice. So is choosing not to support them.

Save it for @theallinpod debate club this week gentleman! 😂😂😂🔥🔥🔥🔥 Reid v Sacks round two! RATINGS BONANZA 📈

Ai2 is the real good guys.

I thought lawfare was the President prosecuting critics on, ahem, trumped up charges? Or have I got that the wrong way round?
  • @selkis_2028 Ryan Selkis on x
I want to remind people that @reidhoffman is one of the scummiest people in Silicon Valley. According to the Trump campaign, he had henchmen threaten founders over their support of Republicans. He and @ronconway were the primary bullies in SF and should be treated as enemies.

@DavidSacks its very funny that “reid hoffman” endorsing anthropic is about the worst possible thing that could happen to the company
  • @pmddomingos Pedro Domingos on x
No, Reid, Anthropic is not one of the good guys. It's a company that keeps injecting its ideology into its LLMs, and that is precisely what we don't need.

    @DavidSacks Indeed

Extreme arguments on either side of an issue are often used to brush away real, thoughtful, and logical arguments. Doing that is intellectually dishonest or idiotic.

@reidhoffman Come on the pod! Thursday taping at 11am PT — you're always welcome to the debate club @reidhoffman!
  • @davidsacks David Sacks on x
The leading funder of lawfare and dirty tricks against President Trump wants you to know that “Anthropic is one of the good guys.” Thanks for clarifying that. All we needed to know.
  • @davidsacks David Sacks on x
I read your post.  It claims that the controversy surrounding Anthropic is about AI safety research.  This is not true; in fact, it's misdirection.  The real issue is not research but rather Anthropic's agenda to backdoor Woke AI and other AI regulations through Blue states like …
