OpenAI's invite-only Sora app becomes the top free app in the US App Store three days after its launch, ahead of Gemini in second and ChatGPT in third
OpenAI now has two of the top three free apps in Apple's App Store, and its new video generation app Sora has snagged the coveted No. 1 spot.
CNBC Ashley Capoot
Context & Ripple Effects
Sora’s limited-access launch gave OpenAI a second prominent consumer entry point alongside ChatGPT, while Gemini was the closest named rival in the ranking. Follow-up coverage indicated that the early surge translated into one million downloads in under five days and later 2.6 million iOS downloads through October 18.
First-order effects
- Sora gains immediate visibility and low-friction user acquisition from leading the U.S. free-app chart despite being invite-only.
- OpenAI occupies two of the top three positions, while Gemini is pushed behind Sora in this high-visibility mobile distribution channel.
Second-order effects
- Google and other consumer-AI rivals face added pressure to make their mobile products more discoverable and differentiated, rather than relying solely on model comparisons.
- The result strengthens the value of OpenAI’s existing consumer audience as a launch channel for adjacent AI products, including video generation.
Third-order effects
- If repeated across products, AI competition will increasingly be shaped by consumer distribution and product packaging—not only underlying model capability.
- Fast chart performance is an early demand signal, but sustained use and a durable business model would determine whether standalone generative-video apps become a lasting category.
The trend: Consumer AI companies are turning individual model capabilities into standalone mobile apps to capture attention, distribution and repeat engagement.

I think “slop” is a great term in the current moment, but I also expect it will become dated within a few years as AI improves and its output generally gets to fewer inaccuracies than the human-created material it is compared against.

2 more thoughts on slop: 1 - When new tech gets democratized, everyone jumps in and plays. When DAWs hit, I and many others made stuff existing musicians would've called slop. It wasn't good, but it was a gateway to real creation, and the best artists still rose above. 2 - When

There are many legit reasons to be concerned about video generation tech IMO. But conflating video generation as a whole with slop is a mistake, just as it was with text generation. “Not all generated videos” but unironically, and the distinction is important.
