Top 100 AI consumer apps: Gemini ranks #2 behind ChatGPT on mobile with ~50% of its MAUs, with Grok at #4; on the web, Gemini has ~12% of ChatGPT's visits
5th edition — This is the fifth edition of our Top 100 Gen AI Consumer Apps which reflects two and a half years of data on how everyday AI usage is evolving.
Andreessen Horowitz
Context & Ripple Effects
This fifth consumer-app ranking captures an early split in the race for a default AI: Gemini was already the closest mobile challenger to ChatGPT, while its web audience remained far smaller. Grok's fourth-place mobile position also showed that the category was not a two-product market.
Later usage measurements made that opening more consequential: Gemini’s MAUs grew while ChatGPT’s grew more slowly in late 2025, according to subsequent mobile-usage tracking, and later trackers recorded a narrower share gap between the two. The ranking is therefore a useful baseline for the move from one dominant consumer AI app toward a more contested market.
First-order effects
Gemini gains a clear consumer-positioning advantage as the No. 2 mobile AI app, but the reported web-traffic gap underscores that ChatGPT remains the stronger destination product.
Grok’s No. 4 mobile rank puts it among the leading consumer alternatives rather than outside the top tier of AI-app usage.
Second-order effects
The mobile/web divergence makes distribution and product surface distinct competitive fronts: a strong mobile footprint does not automatically translate into comparable web demand.
If cross-platform usage continues to fragment, consumer AI competition is likely to be organized around access points and habitual use rather than a single universal leader.
The durable shift is toward a multi-app “default AI” market, where relative position can vary substantially between mobile and web.
The trend: Consumer generative-AI usage is evolving from ChatGPT-led concentration toward platform-specific competition shaped by distribution advantage and recurring user habits.
IMO, this may be the most interesting data from our @a16z top 100 AI apps report. We looked at “Affinity Scores” for the top 6 most popular LLMs. Ex. what other apps are you most likely to have if you're a Claude or Perplexity user? This gave us mini-profiles of AI [image]
@omooretweets @a16z grok's jump is fascinating, shows strong product-market fit, deepseek's decline is a reminder that novelty fades fast, retention is key
4️⃣ Claude and Meta struggle on mobile Despite significant distribution on web, Claude and Meta AI have struggled to take off on mobile, while Perplexity and Grok have soared. This is more understandable for Claude as usage is heavily coding-related, but more confusing for Meta. …
