Hands-on with macOS 26: the interface is a mess, like a poorly imported iOS design, but the power of Spotlight and Shortcuts will delight many longtime users

For many years, Apple's annual operating-system cycle seemed to be all about the iPhone, with the occasional bone thrown to the Mac or iPad.

Apple positioned Tahoe as a broad Mac update built around Liquid Glass and new system capabilities, after reports that it was pursuing a more consistent design across iPhone, iPad, and Mac. This review exposes the trade-off: the cross-platform visual direction can feel less native to the Mac even as automation and search deepen.

The split is consistent with an earlier Tahoe assessment that found the new Spotlight useful but Raycast stronger and with iPadOS 26’s emphasis on windowing, Files, and smarter Shortcuts for professional work. Apple’s desktop-platform story is therefore increasingly about getting work done through system tools, not only visual consistency.

The trend: Apple’s platform strategy is converging around shared design and system-level productivity tools, with the Mac’s success depending on whether that convergence preserves desktop-native workflows.
