Sources: Mike Rockwell and Craig Federighi started a project to evaluate external models to power Siri; after testing, Anthropic's tech seemed most promising

Apple Inc. is considering using artificial intelligence technology from Anthropic PBC or OpenAI to power a new version of Siri

Bloomberg Mark Gurman

This doesn't seem great, but neither was WWDC promising A.I. + Siri integration only to have it never ship.  Here we are over a year later and it still hasn't shipped!

AAPL up nearly 2% on this report.  [embedded post]

if apple forces chatgpt on me i might actually have to look at linux

It's the only reasonable move right now.  Even Apple's new cloud model feels *at best* like an 8B one from two years ago.  —  Give me Siri Claude ASAP https://mastodon.social/...

Apple hasn't made a final decision about abandoning its models for Siri and it is concurrently running a project called LLM Siri that would power next year's Siri overhaul with in-house AI. Still, Apple's top executives believe using third-party models is key to a turnaround.

@matthewstoller Or we use the competing phone and AI assistant from what I guess you would call the other monopoly.
  • @matthewstoller Matt Stoller on x
It's a testament to Apple's monopoly power that Siri is unusable and we all just kind of shrug.
  • @emostaque Emad on x
Contrarian take (aha): Apple shouldn't train their own LLMs.  Apple makes 75% revenue on hardware & 75% profits on services.  Thats their business.  Cost of inference for large models is collapsing, small open source models improving fast They have human id, AI chips etc Just let…

If the rumors are true and the MLX team is considering leaving, it would mark one of Apple's worst strategic missteps at a critical moment.  Killing MLX wouldn't just derail Apple's AI trajectory—it would undercut the entire Studio line and the M-series chips. @tim_cook, nurture …

My impression is that the MLX team at Apple are a tiny group of engineers who are pretty much single-handedly giving NVIDIA and CUDA a run for their money
  • @samifathi_ Sami Fathi on x
It would be a smart move, but it would hurt Tim Cook's perceived legacy. Everyone will be quick to label “Apple abandoning its own AI ship” as his legacy, despite the launch of the Apple Watch, AirPods, new era of Mac with Apple Silicon, Vision Pro, and services under him.

Siri is smothered by Apple's paranoia over privacy. Every shiny feature gets paraded into the sunlit quad of Apple Park, dissected for data needs — and if it threatens to know too much, it's executed on the spot. That ruthless cull leaves Siri hobbling on scraps of intelligence.

$AAPL is well positioned for the back half of the year, driven by AI chatter and anticipated iPhone growth.  ➡️The stock finished up 2% today (Nasdaq up 0.5%) on Mark Gurman's report that Apple is doing everything they can to meet the spring 2026 Siri launch.  Specifically, they'…

Siri to use Claude is absolutely huge for Anthropic. I never thought they'd win the AI race given the sheer backing OpenAI have and the unprecedented levels of Data Google have. But this would give them half a chance of winning
  • @giffmana Lucas Beyer on x
    They have a cloud infrastructure?
  • @benbajarin Ben Bajarin on x
Apple can't, yes can't, create a internet scale LLM like OpenAI/Google, etc. So partnering here makes sense, while focusing their AI models on use case specific/fine tuned models that deepen the customer experience with their and third party software at the OS level.
  • @rihardjarc Rihard Jarc on x
So $AAPL is considering side-lining its own LLM and instead using OpenAI or Anthropic in Siri.  While this might seem like an easy and simple solution for $AAPL right now, it could end up costing them tens of billions down the road as they become dependant on others for core feat…

Apple going with Anthropic.  The developers I study are mostly using Claude for their back ends.  Google Gemini is better for multi modal, but Claude isn't far behind there and I predict will catch up quickly once it gets access to Apple's scale.  I have 100,000 photos I would be…

Apple is constantly switching not knowing which way to turn originally going to Gemini then switching to Open AI for the actual release... purchasing perplexity, Why are they running around like a chicken with there head cut off?  Didn't they just release a paper showing that LLM…

absolutely astonishing.  apple used to own the full stack, silicon to software to services.  now they're outsourcing the one layer that will define the next decade of computing.  it's a metaphysical betrayal of their own dna.  openai & anthropic don't need apple.  but apple despe…

The effort to explore outside large language models instead of its Apple Foundation Models has taken a toll on its AI team. Tom Gunter, one of its top engineers, left last week. And the team behind MLX, Apple's open source AI framework, threatened to quit.

Making things more difficult for Apple are gigantic salaries now being offered by Meta and OpenAI, which can more than double the pay Apple is offering its AI model developers.
  • @markgurman Mark Gurman on x
Also in the latest story: Apple weeks ago abruptly killed plans to develop in-house coding models which powered Swift Assist announced last year. Xcode can now tap into ChatGPT or Anthropic's Claude, as was announced at WWDC. Apple uses Claude for coding internally.
