President Trump plans to sign an executive order this week to grant TikTok a 90-day extension in enforcement of the sale-or-ban law, marking his third extension
New York CNN — — TikTok just got another lifeline from the White House, with President Donald Trump set to delay enforcement …
CNN
Context & Ripple Effects
The White House first pursued a 75-day January enforcement pause to seek a resolution, then issued a second 75-day reprieve in April while saying required approvals were unfinished.
Related coverage also says a largely completed U.S. transaction was put on hold after China signaled opposition amid tariffs. The new delay matters because it preserves negotiating time without resolving the ownership and approval impasse.
First-order effects
- TikTok, its U.S. users, creators and advertisers avoid an immediate disruption from enforcement, while the platform gets another operating window.
- Potential deal parties receive more time to resolve a transaction and secure approvals; the sale-or-ban law remains unenforced during that period.
Second-order effects
- Rival social platforms lose the near-term chance to capture users, creator activity and advertising spending from a forced TikTok exit.
- Repeated deadline changes extend uncertainty for prospective buyers and TikTok’s commercial partners, especially as the legal footing for successive extensions has been questioned.
Third-order effects
- If delays continue, a statutory platform-security remedy could function increasingly as an executive-negotiation tool rather than a fixed compliance deadline.
- The stalled transaction suggests that U.S. platform ownership rules may remain entangled with broader U.S.-China economic bargaining, making durable resolution harder than a domestic buyer search alone.
The trend: TikTok is becoming a test case for how cross-border technology restrictions are managed through rolling enforcement discretion while governments pursue politically viable ownership outcomes.

the tiktok ban is extremely stupid and never should've happened... but the way that trump is just steamrolling past SCOTUS and Congress to ignore it is even worse www.nbcnews.com/news/us-news...

The tiktok ban bullshit should never have happened in the first place, but Trump does not have any power to extend this statutorily. Just rule by fiat. [embedded post]

I read the arguments on both sides of the whole “TikTok ban is unconstitutional / TikTok ban is fine” thing, and I could see the arguments on both sides. — But it's clear that TikTok was coerced, by this law, into censoring anti-Trump speech, and so as applied this ban should b…

Frankly I hope President Ocasio-Cortez fines Apple and Google into bankruptcy for doing blatantly illegal shit re: distributing TikTok just because Donald Trump wanted them to.

I'd be surprised if TikTok isn't paying Trump a fee every time he grants an extension. Went would Trump set up multiple avenues for paying bribes and not use them whenever possible?

I thought the TikTok ban was an idiotic moral panic and a gross curtailment of expressive freedom, but I'm at least as uncomfortable about a scenario where a platform with 170m US users exists entirely on the personal sufferance of Donald Trump (or any president). [embedded post…

this story doesn't even mention the controlling law! Have we really reached the point where media is just afraid to say that the President is openly breaking the law? Or even to provide the information necessary to allow us to infer it ourselves? — www.cnn.com/2025/06/17/t...

President Trump has now given TikTok three extensions of the deadline — codified in law and upheld by SCOTUS — to divest from its Chinese-owned parent company or face a ban in the U.S.

We heard throughout the campaign how Biden was soft on China and had been bought off by China. And now Trump has pulled key assets out of Asia, extended the TikTok ban, and is on track to lead the U.S. into another war in the Middle East. So much for “tough on China”

Wonder if TikTok is going to consider reviving its legal battle against the ban. If the president is allowing it to operate more than 6 months after it was legally required to be banned, it gets tougher for the govt to argue it's a legit natonal security threat?
