Bluesky starts rolling out blue check verification, initially limiting verification to select organizations and its moderation team

Bluesky's new verification process launches today.  It mixes the old-school, Twitter-style blue check bestowed by the platform with a more decentralized option for trusted organizations.

Wired Kate Knibbs

Context & Ripple Effects

Bluesky had relied on domain-based identity signals, but related coverage found that approach vulnerable to cybersquatting and impersonation. Adding platform-issued checks introduces a more legible trust signal for users who cannot evaluate a domain on their own.

The rollout also preserves a distributed path through trusted organizations rather than making Bluesky the sole verifier. That model was later broadened to let notable accounts apply and selected organizations verify others in a wider trusted-verifier program.

First-order effects

  • Selected organizations and Bluesky’s moderation team can now confer a visible blue check, while verified accounts gain an identity signal beyond self-managed domain verification.
  • Bluesky assumes direct responsibility for governing who may verify others and for setting the conditions under which a check is meaningful.

Second-order effects

  • Organizations seeking to establish authentic presences on Bluesky have a clearer route to verification, while users receive a more recognizable cue when assessing prominent accounts.
  • The hybrid model creates pressure to make verifier eligibility and enforcement consistent: weak oversight of trusted verifiers would dilute the signal intended to address impersonation.

Third-order effects

  • If Bluesky can maintain standards across both platform and organizational verifiers, verification may evolve from a single platform credential into shared trust infrastructure.
  • The approach tests whether decentralized social services can add mainstream identity assurances without reverting entirely to centralized control; its credibility will depend on how disputes and abuse are handled.

The trend: Social platforms are rebuilding visible identity systems as layered trust infrastructure, combining platform oversight with delegated verification.

Looks like we're doing the whole blue tick thing again then

lotta strong feelings about the checkies, as expected—broadly positive once people get how it works!  imo the Bluesky app is an opinionated lens of an open network, and this additional editorial trust layer is a strong compliment to the more objective domains layer.  I love that …

Here we go! @kateconger.com was verified - not by Bluesky but by the NYTimes, one of the “trusted verifiers”  —  Gonna keep saying it: a healthy digital society should distribute power! [embedded post]

what i really hope doesn't happen is for verification badges to accidentally discourage orgs and people from doing domain verification

Ok, this is neat.  Any account can publish verification records, and the Bluesky Trusted Verifiers are just the ones preloaded in the official client.  Similarly to how moderation works with labelers.  [embedded post]

(not getting likes because my posts are bad) it's because i'm not verified

Will be very curious to see how well this rolls out.  So far the only account I've come across with it is the New York Times but ymmv.  [embedded post]

This thread introducing a significant change to a feature or policy on a social media platform closely resembles how a tech company should communicate with the people formerly known as the audience.  —  I'd love to see moderated Q&As, where @bsky.app staff build out FAQs by answe…

Don't take @bsky.app's word for it: trust and verify how @safety.bsky.app is approaching account verification at @wired.com: www.wired.com/story/bluesk...  Using independent sources of authority to establish a given identity is a smart, potentially transformative approach.  Watch…

A couple of quick thoughts on this before I disappear for my morning block of meetings  —  1. Domains are still valuable identity signals!  Multiple methods are good to have  —  2. Identity verification will continue to evolve from here  —  1/2 [embedded post]

    3. Trusted Verifiers are in keeping with our ethos — that Bluesky shouldn't be the sole verifier, and that there should be systems that exist outside of us as part of a robust civic infrastructure.  The world shouldn't depend on massive social companies as the sole authorities  —…

Glad to see this coming, look forward to seeing details on how it works.  Still do hope they do “rel=me” as a baseline of how to verify that a Bluesky account and a website owner are the same users.  This works well in the fediverse and could here too.  —  beebom.com/bluesky-veri…

We're introducing a new layer of verification on Bluesky — a user-friendly, easily recognizable blue check.  —  In addition to account verification issued by Bluesky, we're also introducing Trusted Verifiers.  Select independent organizations can verify accounts directly.  [image…

Bluesky just dropped verification, but decentralized.  Love their take on a feature that's pay-to-play and pay-to-win on most competing platforms 👏🏼
