Intel said on Monday it would sell a 51% stake in Altera to private equity firm Silver Lake, valuing the programmable chip unit at $8.75 billion.

    FPGAs go up and down in terms of popularity; for a while the hyperscalers relied on them but now the form of the accelerator for this cycle has largely been chosen - and Intel is in survival mode not expansion mode [embedded post]

    I have been saying for some time...Intel has to be more focused. Core data center and client innovation and foundry. The spinoff of the majority of Altera is a prudent move to raise capital and focus its resources. I expect more of this under new CEO Lip-Bu Tan. $INTC

    Intel announced that it has reached an agreement to sell 51 percent of its Altera FPGA business to private equity firm Silver Lake. The chipmaker will own the remaining 49 percent. Altera's current CEO, Sandra Rivera, will be replaced by former Marvell executive Raghib Hussain.
