OpenAI launches GPT-4.5, its “most knowledgeable model yet” in research preview, initially warning it's not a frontier model and may perform below o1 or o3-mini
OpenAI's newest and largest model is being released as a research preview.
The Verge
Context & Ripple Effects
GPT-4.5 arrives after OpenAI’s o1 release foregrounded reasoning trade-offs, extending a product line in which model capability is not presented as a single ranking. The research-preview framing and the company’s own caveat make the model’s profile—not merely its scale—the relevant comparison.
Related coverage subsequently records o3 and o4-mini as reasoning-focused options, reinforcing a portfolio split between broad knowledge, reasoning performance, and lower-cost alternatives.
First-order effects
- OpenAI adds GPT-4.5 to its available model lineup as a research preview, while explicitly limiting expectations for reasoning, coding, and some benchmark-oriented tasks.
- Prospective users must evaluate GPT-4.5 for writing, contextual adaptation, and aesthetic judgment rather than assume that a newer, larger model is the default choice for every workload.
Second-order effects
- Model selection becomes more workload-specific: teams testing GPT-4.5 will need to compare it with reasoning-oriented and smaller alternatives instead of treating version number as a sufficient procurement signal.
- OpenAI’s messaging makes capability segmentation more salient for rival model vendors as well, since broad knowledge, reasoning, coding, and cost can be positioned as distinct competitive axes.
Third-order effects
- If this portfolio pattern persists, general-purpose AI platforms will increasingly compete through routed or explicitly segmented model portfolios rather than a single universally “best” release.
- That shift raises the importance of operational evaluation: enterprises will need task-level testing and governance to match models to use cases as capability claims become more multidimensional.
The trend: AI model competition is shifting from simple successor releases toward differentiated portfolios optimized for distinct capability and cost profiles.

GPT 4.5 is as I expected: just more pretraining data. Pretraining scaling for text is mostly saturated. Reasoning (o1, deepseek) made us think that progress was going up exponentially, but its mostly better at tuned benchmarks. Progress continues, but its not exponential.

# The *actual* LLM scaling law. Adding more compute and data to LLMs makes them: - Linearly more expensive, and - Logarithmically more useful. Therefore: - Scaling becomes less useful the more you do it (once you reach a point where cost is non-trivial).
