Perplexity releases Deep Research, offering five queries daily to free users and 500 to subscribers, available now on the web and soon on iOS, Android, and Mac

Perplexity shattered the artificial intelligence market's status quo today by launching Deep Research, a tool …

VentureBeat Michael Nuñez

Context & Ripple Effects

Deep Research extends Perplexity’s existing paid answer-engine model, which earlier coverage framed as a potential challenge to conventional search through its Perplexity Pro offering.

The web-first release also fits Perplexity’s push beyond a single search interface: its Android app had already added an assistant capable of multi-app actions, creating another future distribution surface for research workflows.

First-order effects

  • Free users get a limited way to try longer-form research, while the much higher subscriber allowance makes research volume an explicit Pro benefit.
  • Perplexity can begin serving the feature on the web immediately, with iOS, Android, and Mac availability set to broaden access later.

Second-order effects

  • The free-versus-subscriber gap turns intensive research use into a clearer conversion lever, while also constraining the cost of serving free requests.
  • Competing AI search products face added pressure to match both research-oriented outputs and cross-platform availability rather than compete only on basic answers.

Third-order effects

  • If research agents become a standard layer of AI search, differentiation will increasingly rest on reliable web access, product workflow, and the economics of repeated inference—not simply a chat interface.
  • More answers synthesized from web material could intensify the longer-running tension over how publishers’ content is used and attributed in AI search.

The trend: AI answer engines are evolving from one-shot search responses into metered, multi-step research products distributed across everyday computing platforms.

The small number of queries on AI services these days does remind me of when we had tiny limits on data service on smartphones back in the day

Introducing Deep Research on Perplexity. Deep Research lets you generate in-depth research reports on any topic. Available to everyone for free—up to 5 queries per day for non-subscribers and 500 queries per day for Pro users. [video]

Excited to introduce the Perplexity Deep Research Agent: available for free to all users. Paid users only need to pay $20/mo to access an expert level researcher on any topic for 500 daily queries, and need to wait less than three minutes for getting a full research report. [vide…

In addition to attaining high scores on industry benchmarks, Deep Research on Perplexity completes most tasks in under 3 minutes (and we're working to make it even faster). [image]

Deep Research on Perplexity scores 21.1% on Humanity's Last Exam, outperforming Gemini Thinking, o3-mini, o1, DeepSeek-R1, and other top models. What the f***?! How did they achieve this!

Perplexity has always been my go-to for research. This is the platform that this capability most naturally fits into among all the agents.

wow. i just used @perplexity_ai's new deep research tool and i hate to say it but, @AravSrinivas and the team have cooked. it's quicker. it's cheaper. it scrapes more sources, better sources. and in my testing so far it's very much on par with open ai's $200 version.

Deep Research on Perplexity scores 21.1% on Humanity's Last Exam, outperforming Gemini Thinking, o3-mini, o1, DeepSeek-R1, and other top models. We also have optimized Deep Research for speed. [image]

an absolute joke of a product btw — how could you even green light releasing this? Did they roleplay OpenAI's version (or even Gemini's) dont exist? That or they wanted to ride the wave of the “Deep Research” hype Either way, good lord...

Deep Research is now a commodity thanks to Perplexity [video]

I asked all 3 Deep Researches to “compare 25 LLMs in a table on 20 axes” to figure out which one was the best. The winner was OpenAI. It had the most detailed, high-quality and accurate answer, but you do pay $200/mo for it. [image]

Been testing this, and honestly it's such a steal at $20/month. Pays for itself instantly. Worth getting a sub before they raise prices 😅

The competition in the space is just incredible. A week ago, paid $200 to OpenAI to use Deep Research: and I was floored by results. Now floored again by Perplexity's Deep Research Agent: standout. More sources. Whoa. (+ @Pragmatic_Eng subscribers get it for free for a year!)
