Apple releases an Apple TV app for Android phones and tablets, limited to TV+, MLS Season Pass, and MLB Friday Night Baseball; the app doesn't support casting

The Apple TV app is finally making its way to Android users.  The app is now available in the Google Play Store for Android phones and tablets.

Great to see Apple TV finally arrive on Android.  It's always been odd to me that a service Apple has invested so much on wasn't available with a native app on the platform.  —  Details and some screenshots from my Android media tablet: www.macstories.net/news/apples- ...  [image…

It is directionally true that “content is king” but at a certain point you fall so behind on features that it matters.  Apple TV is putting out a lot of great shows that many people simply can't watch.  [embedded post]

thrilled to see Apple TV land on Android devices today! it's an excellent Android citizen too: themeable app icon: ✅ PIP support: ✅ offline downloads: ✅ foldable posture support: ✅

Apple TV is finally on Android, and yet they still don't let you access movies or shows that you purchased in the app.  Some of us use both Apple and Android devices, and we should be able to access content that we paid for in any version of the app.

Unlikely to help Apple TV+'s tiny viewing, which was just a 0.33% share of US TV viewing in December. (The Gauge information below is TV viewing only). ~15% of Apple TV+ viewing in 3Q24 was on computers and mobile devices, ~85% was on TVs. [image]

Apple begging Google to reset its star ratings rn (these reviews originate from the Android TV app which is buggy/required Apple device to login/etc) [Screenshot from TV+ app in Play Store: 1.6 stars, 50M downloads]

the most shocking thing here is that Apple used modern nice-looking Android devices for the promo images

It's amusing seeing an Apple paywall with a Play Store payment. Hope they are paying the full 15% (and Google 30% on their iOS apps). [Apple, you know who to call if you run into any issues with payments on Android 😉] [image]

Apple TV+ on Android is huge! I'm a little biased because I have a lot of really cool Android phones I'm testing right now, but I'm really excited to start having better access to Apple TV+! Severance tomorrow on an Android phone perhaps...
