OpenAI updates ChatGPT's Canvas feature with o1 model support and HTML and React code rendering, making it a direct competitor to Claude's Artifacts

Select o1 from the model picker and use the toolbox icon or the “/canvas” command ✅Canvas can render HTML & React code @openai : ✅We've also fully rolled out canvas on the ChatGPT desktop app for macOS to all tiers. Lee Robinson / @leeerob : This is awesome. React and shadcn/ui natively in ChatGPT. Romain Huet / @romainhuet : One of the coolest examples I've seen: @edwinarbus instantly built a Windows 95 simulator in ChatGPT with canvas using @OpenAI o1—then started playing Minesweeper right there! It just worked! 💣 Kevin Weil / @kevinweil : More good @ChatGPTapp launches for you—shipping some top requests on a Friday! 🫡 1. Canvas can now render HTML/React, meaning you can make your own mini-apps using Canvas. 2. You can use o1 with Canvas (great for coding) 3. Canvas is available on ChatGPT desktop for Mac. AshutoshShrivastava / @ai_for_success : ChatGPT just k!lled a few more startups today with the new Canvas updates. This is actually a huge release. [video] Edwin / @edwinarbus : you can now use o1 to code in chatgpt canvas, and it renders html and react apps used it to quickly build a windows 95 sim! iterated on it within chatgpt—adding minesweeper, notepad files that can be saved and edited, even pointer traillssssss [video] Karina Nguyen / @karinanguyen_ : Some of my favorite frontend apps w/ canvas + o1: 1/ Chat app, but ideally in the future you can just recreate chatgpt app [video] Elvis / @omarsar0 : WOW! ChatGPT Canvas can now build React apps! Here is my first little Canvas app that lets me upload images and then it uses OpenAI vision API to explain them. Anyone can build apps in a matter of seconds. It can even call APIs! So cool! [video] Karina Nguyen / @karinanguyen_ : o1 + canvas is finally here! I asked o1 model to draw its self-portrait in d3.js [video] Simon Willison / @simonw : Canvas just become a Claude Artifacts competitor - I'm surprised they didn't ship with them day one to be honest Simon Willison / @simonw : The new @OpenAI Canvas really needs a detailed manual What are the rules for loading external libraries? It seems to work for some of them Can it make outbound fetch() API calls? I've been getting all kinds of weird errors from it that I can't figure out [image] Sulman Choudhry / @sulmanrc : The future is agentic... and generative. We are building towards highly personalized apps that are built just in time. Oh and /canvas is really nifty too. @openai : Canvas with o1 is available to Pro, Plus, and Team users. React/HTML code rendering is available to Pro, Plus, Team, and Free users. Both updates will roll out to Enterprise and Edu in a couple weeks. Latent Moss / @latentmoss : HTML/React rendering and o1 - nice! This makes Canvas much more interesting and useful for me.

Context & Ripple Effects

Canvas began as a beta side-by-side workspace for writing and coding, then moved beyond the chat-only interface. Its later expansion to all ChatGPT users added Python and custom-GPT support, establishing it as a broader production surface rather than a limited editor.

This update brings o1 into that workspace and makes web-interface output directly viewable. That narrows the practical gap with Claude Artifacts by competing on the experience of building, inspecting, and iterating on an artifact in one place.

First-order effects

  • Pro, Plus, and Team users can pair o1 with Canvas for coding work, while HTML and React rendering is available across Free through paid tiers; Enterprise and Edu access is planned later.
  • ChatGPT users can now run and inspect rendered web UI inside Canvas instead of treating generated HTML or React as text to move into a separate development environment.

Second-order effects

  • Claude Artifacts faces a more direct feature-for-feature challenge as OpenAI combines an interactive workspace with a model positioned for reasoning-heavy coding tasks.
  • The value of Canvas shifts toward the surrounding workflow—model selection, rendering, and iteration—not simply code generation, raising pressure on assistant products to make outputs executable and reviewable in place.

Third-order effects

  • If these capabilities continue to converge, conversational assistants may compete increasingly as AI work surfaces that contain creation, preview, and revision, rather than as standalone model endpoints.
  • Broader access to interactive rendering could make interface quality and workflow integration durable differentiators between general-purpose AI assistants, alongside underlying model performance.

The trend: This is part of the shift from chatbots that return code and prose toward assistants that serve as integrated, interactive workspaces for producing and testing them.
