Trump pardons Silk Road creator Ross Ulbricht, a crypto and libertarian cult hero serving a life sentence since 2015 on money laundering, drug charges, and more

Ross Ulbricht was serving a life sentence for creating a site in a shady corner of the internet to sell heroin, cocaine and other illicit substances.

How is this not getting more condemnation?  Trump has floated the idea of executing drug dealers yet he frees this particular drug dealer because he is a crypto bro cause celebre.  The embarrassments just keep coming.  Nice work law and order voters, you dimwits.  —  www.nytimes.…

Pretty good evidence that Trump doesn't even know what he's signing to appease his base: He completely butchers Ulbricht's name.  [image]

annnnnnnd there's the Ross Ulbricht pardon.  —  Even if you've got mixed feelings about Silk Road, his sentencing was based, in part, on evidence that he ordered the murder of an witness, an informant, and three others.  —  www.wired.com/2017/05/silk...

I'm still haunted by the fact that the case against this guy apparently didn't officially resolve the seemingly important question of whether he tried to have several people murdered. https://www.nytimes.com/...

Ross was just granted a FULL AND UNCONDITIONAL PARDON by @realDonaldTrump. Words cannot express how grateful we are. President Trump is a man of his word and he just saved Ross's life. ROSS IS A FREE MAN!!!!!

I found ~430 BTC across dozens of wallets associated with Ross Ulbricht that were not confiscated by the USGovt and have been untouched for 13+ years Back then these were probably dust wallets, now, collectively, they are worth about $47M. Welcome back Ross [image]

I am not involved or associated with any memecoin bearing my name. There is no official Ross coin.

Ross Ulbricht has been freed by President Trump with a full pardon! Thank you for keeping your word to me and others who have been advocating for Ross' freedom, Mr. President! #freeRoss [image]

Ross Ulbricht is free! Thanks to President Trump for keeping his word to end Ross's unjust sentence by granting him a full and unconditional pardon. Prayers have been answered for Ross, Lyn (his mother), and all their family and friends. So happy for them!

After 4,133 days in prison, Ross Ulbricht is free. A young man who built a platform, served a sentence far longer than the crime deserved, and became a symbol of excessive punishment in the digital age. Welcome home, Ross. Today marks the start of a new chapter.

A court found that Ross Ulbricht probably paid $730,000 to supposed contract killers to murder at least five people who could expose his darkweb drugs marketplace. The hits weren't charged criminally, but did contribute to his harsh sentence. Trump just pardoned him.
  • @ianhuyett Ian Huyett on x
The judge who sentenced Ross Ulbricht gave him life without parole because Ross is white. Judge Katherine Forrest suggested that, because of Ross' “privilege,” she was giving a much harsher sentence than she would give to a “drug dealer from the Bronx.” [image]

Does this mean the war on drugs is over and it's legal to run an online drug market now because I am looking for a new project
  • @ariehkovler Arieh Kovler on x
James Ellingson, the “hitman” hired by Ross Ulbricht, has not yet been tried. I'm curious how if Trump's DoJ will try him for scamming poor Ulbricht, who paid good money for those murders. https://www.justice.gov/...

If Ross launches a memecoin and it pumps I'm going to lose it. But also maybe buy it.
  • @timjacobwise Tim Wise on x
So Trump has previously said drug dealers should be put to death. But he's freeing Ross Ulbricht. Because he didn't mean rich white drug dealers. Because he's a racist.
  • @bensig Ben Sigman on x
Ross Ulbricht (@RealRossU) didn't sell drugs—he built an anonymous, free, and open platform on Tor called Silk Road. Silk Road sold apparel, art, books, collectibles, computer equipment, electronics, herbs, and yeah—drugs. But according to friends who used it, Silk Road was [imag…

Ross William Ulbricht stole hundreds of millions of dollars & ran a massive dark web narcotics scheme as the drug epidemic destroyed lives. He was convicted. Trump just gave him a full & unconditional pardon. Remember this when Trump blames immigrants for drugs & economic harm.

Silk Road no more. At the time it struck many as a very harsh sentence but it was back when most bad never heard of Bitcoin or the dark web [image]
  • @iwriteok Robert Evans on x
actually pretty happy to hear Ross Ulbricht is being pardoned. he did very bad things, i am not a denier, but i don't believe a man that young deserved to spend the rest of his life in a cage. i hope he makes the next chapter of his life better.
  • @chaseforliberty Chase Oliver on x
I am happy Ross Ulbricht is free and pardoned. I am happy that Lyn Ulbricht will be able to see her son free from imprisonment. There are many people who fought for this, and chief among them was Lyn Ulbricht. A mother's fierce determination to see her son free. She packed up [im…

Ulbricht is a high tech drug dealer who got rich off the dead bodies of those who overdosed by the sales he made possible on the dark web. He's a real Day Two priority.

This is the guy who started the Silk Road dark website which was used the facilitate major global drug trafficking. Was serving life in prison. But when Trump wanted the Libertarian Party endorsement he promised them this. He never heard of Ulbricht. Even spelled his name wrong. …

For anyone feeling nostalgic on the occasion of Ross Ulbricht's pardon, here's my interview with him (as the Dread Pirate Roberts) from 2013, just a few months before his arrest: https://www.forbes.com/...

I say this without snark: I am grateful that this worldview—that people deserve to rot & die in prison for victimless crimes, that no mercy should be extended, that redemption is impossible—is losing handily. Welcome home to Ross Ulbricht.
  • @esaagar Saagar Enjeti on x
I'm no fan of the silk road but the way the FBI set up Ross Ulbricht for life is still one of the most insane cases I've ever read about
  • @jamesrbuk James Ball on x
The constituency calling for this was a very small and extremely online section of Trump's base. If regular voters actually hear about this, they'll *hate* it: he's a drug kingpin who tried (albeit ineptly) to have rivals killed. Very much Trump unchained stuff.
  • @ariehkovler Arieh Kovler on x
In 2023, the DoJ charged James Ellingson aka Redandwhite, the alleged “hitman” that Ulbricht hired to do the killings. The hitman was actually a scammer and just faked the ‘proof’ pics and kept the cash. But Ulbricht thought he was paying for killings. https://www.justice.gov/...…
  • @johnstossel John Stossel on x
President Trump just pardoned Ross Ulbricht. Good. Ulbricht has served almost 10 years of a life sentence for creating the Silk Road website, where people bought and sold things the government didn't like. [video]

When I endorsed Trump for President, he and I had a conversation in which he assured me he would free Ross Ulbricht. He even suggested I could include it in my endorsement statement, which I did. Many thanks to @angela4LNCChair of the Libertarian party for elevating this cause. […

Ross Ulbricht operated a meth and fent exchange, let him rot. Libertarians are beyond retarded for hyping up this drug dealer
  • @theviewfromll2 Susan Simpson on x
Ulbricht was also charged with paying hundreds of thousands of dollars to have 6 people murdered, but the charges were deemed unnecessary and dismissed with prejudice after he got a life sentence.
