Sony's shares in Japan surged 50%+ from an August low to reach its new all-time high since 2000 last week, as investors are bullish on its gaming growth in 2025
- Next year ‘one of the greatest’ for video games: Smithers — M&A and good management boost stock's appeal: Janus Henderson
Bloomberg
Context & Ripple Effects
Sony’s PlayStation strength has previously featured in its earnings story, including a 2017 profit beat boosted by strong PlayStation sales. More recently, Sony earmarked about $2.13B for gaming R&D—roughly 40% of its R&D budget—in a gaming investment plan that exceeded spending on electronics and chips.
The share move matters because it indicates that investors are assigning greater weight to gaming’s prospective contribution, alongside management and M&A execution, rather than treating it as just one part of Sony’s broader portfolio.
First-order effects
- Sony’s market valuation is being repriced around expectations for 2025 gaming growth, with shareholders benefiting immediately from the rally.
- Management’s execution on gaming investment, acquisitions and operations becomes a more visible test of the investor case cited by Janus Henderson.
Second-order effects
- The rally raises the market benchmark for other game-platform and content companies: investors may increasingly differentiate between firms with credible growth plans and those without them.
- A higher-valued Sony makes M&A strategy more consequential to investors, increasing attention on whether deals strengthen its gaming position rather than merely add scale.
Third-order effects
- If this pattern persists, public markets may value diversified entertainment-and-technology groups more explicitly through the durability of their game ecosystems and development pipelines.
- The shift would reinforce a long-term allocation of capital toward gaming R&D and portfolio management, though a single share-price surge does not establish that repricing as permanent.
The trend: Gaming is becoming a more central lens through which investors assess the growth, capital allocation and strategic optionality of diversified media and technology companies.

Easily the best outcome (Despite what a lot of weirdos were trying to say in my comments). Sony having a majority share means Kadokawa is safe from a hostile takeover and things can basically just run how they already are.

Said another way, based on what we knew of the LOI, this is best read as Kadokawa fending Sony off. It doesn't mean it's not important. It does mean that the LOI wasn't likely anywhere near what K needed on price.

This was the best possible outcome. Kadokawa doesn't have Sony completely absorb it which would lead to Sony having a legit monopoly of IPs and probably laying off thousands of employees. This benefits both companies in a far more healthy way.

The disappointment PlayStation fans are feeling after the failed Kadokawa acquisition is probably similar to what Xbox fans felt when the CMA tried to block the ABK deal.

For now, this is the ideal outcome. Sony will for sure have influence at Kadokawa, but Kadokawa is still independent and free to release games on whatever platforms they want. It would honestly be disastrous for Kadokawa not to be able to release games on Switch 2.

So no takeover, which is quite a surprise but not unheard of. Kadokawa stock is down -15.95% in after-market trading in Japan, while Sony is up +1.54%.

The 2 companies will discuss how to collaborate more from now on. Sony will help turn Kadokawa IP into live action films and TV shows, co-produce and distribute anime and Sony will help to publish Kadokawa games worldwide! That could mean some FromSoft games published by Sony
