Wow.  OpenAI CTO Mira Murati is leaving the company.  Will be fascinating to see what she does next.  Perhaps she can let me know now if YouTube is being used for Sora training data!

the very obvious dots we're all connecting is that there have been reports of openAI becoming a for-profit company and giving sam altman a 7% stake as the company nears a $150 billion (!) valuation altman claims it was an amicable split, but mira murati retained independent PR...

A source confirmed to @wired that Murati's last day hasn't been settled on — which suggests that this is either extremely extremely uniquely amicable/chill OR very very sudden and not chill at all?  (Her using her own PR to announce it suggests the latter to me.)

The message being pushed right now by a few key tech companies —including Meta at today's Connect —is that the new new era of these AI models is voice/speech, and OpenAI CTO Mira Murati makes a point to mention this in her just-dropped exit note

I replied with this.  Mira, thank you for everything.  It's hard to overstate how much Mira has meant to OpenAI, our mission, and to us all personally.  I feel tremendous gratitude towards her for what she has helped us build and accomplish, but I most of all feel personal gratit…

There's an exodus of executives from OpenAI, the company is burning billions a year, its enterprise offerings are widely criticized, Sam Altman appears to spend half of his day doing podcasts, and there is still no proven business model. This company is seeking a $150b valuation.
  • @mattyglesias Matthew Yglesias on x
OpenAI's creators hired Sam Altman, an extremely intelligent autonomous agent, to execute their vision of x-risk conscious AGI development for the benefit of all humanity but it turned out to be impossible to control him or ensure he'd stay durably aligned to those goals. 🤔
  • @parmy Parmy Olson on x
OpenAI plans to neuter its nonprofit board. Sam Altman is looking for 7% equity (worth $10.5bn) in the firm. Several leaders like Mira Murati are leaving. I think it's safe to say building A.I. “for the benefit of humanity” was a mirage.

Everyone should watch this video. I sat right next to Sam when he said this, and later realized he wasn't telling the whole truth. (He had some indirect equity he didn't disclose). $10.5B later I think he is a stone-cold liar.

i feel like ppl are reading too much into this openai becoming a for-profit thing / sama taking equity — no investor would give money to a non-profit (duh) and any serious investor would tie the mgmt's incentives to theirs

so let me get this straight openai decides to become a for-profit company now the cto, head of research, and vp of training research all decide to leave on the same day this is announced sam altman gets a $10.5B pay day (7% of the company) on the same day tim cook and satya

Nobody's giving billions to OpenAI out of the goodness of their heart. Long term, they want insane profits and they want its CEO to have a financial incentive to succeed (even if Altman himself would work for free). The non-profit structure hasn't made sense for a while now.

This is also interesting timing, given there has been a lot more recent chatter about Altman's hardware project with Jony Ive (and which Altman said this week was not a phone). Does OpenAI equity = skin in the game to keep Altman from getting too much startup wanderlust?
  • @alexrkonrad Alex Konrad on x
For years, we've wondered how Sam Altman could run OpenAI without any equity. Perhaps OpenAI's new board and Altman have been wondering that, too. Very curious what employees think about this shift further from its non-profit mission. DMs open 👀
