Verizon is moving from tracking drones to serving them: the carrier that partnered with NASA on a $500K project to monitor civilian and commercial drone use via cell towers now plans to sell data plans to drone operators outright. The flip side of the announcement — testing drones as aerial cell towers — treats the aircraft as both customer and infrastructure.

The competitive frame was already set: AT&T and Intel had been running 4G LTE trials aimed at extending drone flight range and cutting signal interference since early 2016, so Verizon's entry makes airborne connectivity a two-carrier race rather than an experiment.
