Sources: Concord's game director steps down, as Firewalk, the studio behind the PlayStation flop, is left in limbo, with some staffers expecting mass layoffs

Ryan Ellis was the hero shooter's game director at Firewalk Studios  —  It's been two weeks since Sony announced it was taking …

Context & Ripple Effects

Sony acquired Firewalk to build a AAA multiplayer title for PlayStation and PC, making Concord a direct test of that live-service investment. Its commercial reversal was already visible when Sony halted sales and issued refunds for Concord shortly after launch.

The director’s departure and reported staff uncertainty came before Sony ultimately closed Firewalk Studios, showing how quickly a failed launch can turn from a product decision into a studio-level decision.

First-order effects

  • Ryan Ellis’s reported exit removes the game director from Firewalk as the studio faces uncertainty over its future and staff anticipate layoffs.
  • Sony must decide whether Firewalk has a viable role after Concord’s sales halt and refund process, rather than simply managing a troubled live game.

Second-order effects

  • The episode raises the cost of Sony’s earlier bet on acquiring Firewalk for a multiplayer PlayStation and PC project, tightening scrutiny of comparable live-service investments.
  • For Firewalk employees, uncertainty over layoffs can make retention and any remaining development work harder while Sony determines the studio’s next step.

Third-order effects

  • If similar failures are handled through rapid shutdowns and studio closures, publishers may favor smaller commitments or tougher milestones before scaling live-service teams.
  • The broader risk is that portfolio diversification into multiplayer games shifts more development risk onto acquired studios when a single launch misses expectations.

The trend: Concord is part of a wider reassessment of costly live-service game bets, where weak early demand can quickly reshape studio strategy and staffing.

I respect that Ryan Ellis the director has truly taken responsibility here and stepped down. Something others like pete parson (bungie) has yet to do. I can only hope that this means something and the team gets a second chance, even if as support for project gummy bears.
