Google is widening the ride-services tab it opened earlier this year when Maps went beyond Uber to add Ola, Hailo and more car services — Lyft and Gett are now bookable options for U.S. users, making the question less 'which app do I open' and more 'whose interface owns the ride'.

The arc that follows confirms why the move mattered: within months Google let riders hail an Uber without leaving Maps via its tweaked ride-hailing screen, Lyft reciprocated by wiring Maps into its drivers' drivers app, and by late 2018 Google Assistant was comparing fares across Uber, Lyft, Ola, Grab and Go-Jek in one price-comparison booking flow.
