AnandTech shuts down after covering PC and mobile hardware for over 27 years; publisher Future plans to keep AnandTech's website and articles live indefinitely

It is with great sadness that I find myself penning the hardest news post I've ever needed to write here at AnandTech.

So much crazy news in the last 24 hours, starting with Anandtech shutting down.  I read Anandtech when Anand was a high schooler and I was still in college learning my craft.  It's not just traditional media that got decimated, tech publications have been affected too. https://ww…

End of an era.  And there is sadness that some of these kind of technology-first publications are going away, only to be left behind by those who specialize in the spectacle of technology.  Thank you Anandtech for 27 great years of learning, and geekery. https://www.anandtech.com…

It's so hard watching the web collapse and ossify into a glorified QVC channel.  The Fed is (probably) going to reduce interest rates in September y'all.  Polish up your resume, get a desk job, start a forum, and start the cycle over again. https://www.anandtech.com/...

Anandtech was amazing up to 2014 .  When Anand Shimpi left Anandtech for Apple, the website was only running on brand name.  When Dr Ian Cutress left in 2022, it began running on fumes.  This was inevitable and no one should be surprised since 2014.  At least they didn't sell the…

So sad to see AnandGech shutting down.  Piles of good (if gorpy) chip coverage over the years.  Consolation prize: contra usual practice in this situation, the existing site will remain on the web. https://www.anandtech.com/...

Damn AnandTech is shutting down.  Literally no one else does in-depth hardware reviews in tech.  This is a massive gap now knowledge.  Like a review on AnandTech isn't just a few canned benchmarks like you'd see on a site like the Verge.  These are deep dives into how the hardwar…

wow, this is a loss, nobody did in depth technical evaluation of hardware like AnandTech.  I constantly referred to their work as a journalist and still used it to understand things afterwards.  Much respect to the staff for never letting it get shittified, even after an acquisit…

Damn, AnandTech is stopping publication:  —  “Still, few things last forever, and the market for written tech journalism is not what it once was - nor will it ever be again.  So, the time has come for AnandTech to wrap up its work, and let the next generation of tech journalists …

@Techmeme Hopefully keeping the site live, means there is a chance of a DPReview-style reprieve

    I'm legitimately sad over this #anandtech  —  https://www.anandtech.com/...

Wow.  Was this the last of the hardcore hardware review/analysis sites?  Perhaps the writing was on the wall when Apple poached one of their lead writers to go and work on its chips.  [embedded post]

RIP to PC hardware news and in depth analysis i checked almost daily from the late 90s through to mid 00s - hoping the site has been updated since my last visit.  [embedded post]

There are scantily few places I trust for truly unbiased performance reviews and technical analysis of silicon. Truly the end of an era and the gap they will leave will be significant.

Well this sucks. Legendary site and run.

Wow. This is a site I learned from as a student and came to rely on as a professional. Salutations and sadness.

This is a sad moments for us. Anand, the founder of AT, played a huge role in supporting HWC and guiding our testing methodologies in the early days. He, like his site, served as an inspiration and true benchmark for the entire tech review industry.

maybe the greatest ever tech site. whoever failed to ensure it continued forever should feel bad

This suuuuuccccccckkkkkksssssss and I say that not only as a former tech journalist, and a reader of teach journalism, but also as someone now in the chip industry who relied on AnandTech's deep, in-depth coverage of silicon products from both us and our competitors.

This was THE site I would go to for reviews on new gear. Man. Bittersweet. Nothing gold can stay.

Anandtech is one of the reasons why I wanted to be a tech journalist. It is quite shocking to read this editorial and frankly saddening too. The future of long-form, in-depth detailed pieces on the latest processors is looking extremely bleak now. Having said that, thanks for

Very sad to hear that. @anandtech already existed when I started this job 21 years ago and it was always a daily point of contact for me. @anandshimpi and what he started was at least in some way an inspiration for what I'm doing today!
  • @whipalash Palash Volvoikar on x
This is the definitive end of an era. As a technology journalist, AnandTech was what you looked at and ultimately aspired to be. It was, and will remain the benchmark. Just happy that Future PLC will keep the site live if not active.

There simply isn't enough space on Twitter to say what needs to be said. I've written for AnandTech for nearly two decades, and I've enjoyed every second of it. Sadly, we've reached the end of the road. But I thank all of our readers over the years; you've made it worth it

I need a word that describes the type of sadness at the slow disappearance of early internet Good Places especially as these are being replaced by slop in the current generation. Like watching Alexandria burn if you knew how to read back then.

This is such sad news for the world of tech journalism. It is not surprising as @anandshimpi quit about 10 years ago. But @RyanSmithAT @IanCutress @ganeshts continued the legacy quite well. Terrible end to what would be the best site for the geeks. Inspired so many of us to take
