Kuo: in the 2025 iPhone lineup, only the iPhone 17 Pro Max will have 12GB of DRAM, instead of 8GB, and a cooling system with vapor chambers and graphite sheets

Just a day after a noted leaker on Chinese microblogging site Weibo suggested the iPhone 17 lineup in 2025 could see an upgrade …

MacRumors Eric Slivka

Context & Ripple Effects

The report extends a long-running pattern of reserving higher-end iPhone hardware for Pro models: earlier coverage similarly separated the iPhone 14 Pro’s A16 and LPDDR5 memory from the base models’ A15 and LPDDR4X in Apple’s prior Pro-tier chip and memory split.

What is new is the reported concentration of both a larger memory allocation and a more elaborate thermal design in the Pro Max alone. Kuo’s accompanying warning of tighter memory supply through 2027 makes the component choice relevant beyond a routine specification upgrade.

First-order effects

  • If implemented, the reported 12GB DRAM and vapor-chamber-plus-graphite cooling package would make the iPhone 17 Pro Max the lineup’s clearest hardware-performance tier, rather than merely a larger Pro model.
  • Apple would concentrate higher-memory and thermal-component demand in one SKU, while other iPhone 17 variants would reportedly remain at 8GB of DRAM.

Second-order effects

  • The Pro Max-specific bill of materials gives rival premium-phone makers another reason to differentiate top models through sustained-performance hardware, not just cameras or displays.
  • A widening memory supply-demand gap could make higher-capacity mobile memory a more consequential procurement and pricing decision for handset makers, especially where data-center demand competes for capacity.

Third-order effects

  • If premium phones increasingly pair larger memory pools with dedicated cooling, flagship segmentation may shift toward sustained on-device workloads and away from largely cosmetic tiering.
  • The report is one data point in Apple’s established use of differentiated memory technology across iPhone tiers; whether it becomes a broader market standard depends on memory availability and whether buyers value the resulting performance difference.

The trend: Flagship smartphones are using memory capacity and thermal headroom as increasingly explicit tools for premium-tier differentiation amid tighter competition for memory supply.

Among the 2025 new iPhone models, only the iPhone 17 Pro Max will feature the following specifications: 1. 12GB DRAM (while the ultra-thin iPhone, iPhone 17, iPhone 17 Pro, and SE4 will all have 8GB). Enhanced on-device AI capabilities will likely be a major selling point for

I find it insane that the iPhone 16 series won't have a vapor chamber cooling system. 15 series can already get very hot, and they'll continue to use graphite??? Cost cutting at its maximum. [image]

Instantly disappointed that 16 Pros won't have Vapor Champers. My iPhone 15 Pro already gets crazy hot

iPhone 17 Pro Max will apparently be the only model next year to feature more ram at 12gb This years 16 series and next year's 17, 17 Slim, 17 Pro & SE will all feature 8gb ram [image]
