Microsoft's HoloLens started as a standalone device: the January 2015 reveal of Windows Holographic positioned it as its own AR computer, followed by demos of Windows 10 apps running on the headset. In June, Microsoft took the decisive step of opening Windows Holographic to hardware partners, naming Intel, AMD, HTC, and Acer among collaborators.

Today's announcement closes that loop: instead of shipping Holographic only through partners' headsets, Microsoft is baking support into every new Windows 10 PC, announced at an Intel developer event — putting the platform's key silicon ally front and center.
