Project Alloy is the public debut of a line Intel had been quietly building: months earlier, sources reported an augmented-reality headset running on RealSense 3D camera tech, and Razer had already agreed to build a Kinect-style streaming camera around the same depth-sensing silicon. At IDF, Intel folds those cameras, sensors, and input controls directly into a wireless headset and wraps them in a new "Merged Reality" platform — positioning itself as the company that defines the whole device, not just the chip inside it.

The follow-through matters as much as the announcement: Intel later showed press a working prototype with upgraded internals out of its Santa Clara VR lab, then ultimately scrapped the reference headset entirely while keeping the underlying R&D, before resurfacing in wearables with the Vaunt smart glasses. Alloy is therefore the test case for whether a silicon vendor can shepherd an entire device category.
