Discussion

  • @telegraph @telegraph on x
The Telegraph is aware of an image circulating on X which purports to be a Telegraph article about ‘emergency detainment camps’. No such article has ever been published by the Telegraph.
  • @josh_self_ Josh Self on x
After over 30 minutes, Musk appears to have finally deleted the post No acknowledgement yet This was my last screen-grab, which records just under 2 million views: [image]

It's great that Twitter explicitly discourages sharing links to news sites (both by limiting visibility to links and because of those tiny headlines) and encourages images, thus leading people to share made up headlines or disbelieve any screenshot they see
  • @jimmysecuk Jimmy Rushton on x
Posted by the deputy leader of British fascist organisation “Britain First”, and then approvingly retweeted by Twitter's resident village idiot, Elon Musk.
  • @jakubkrupa Jakub Krupa on x
You'll never believe who shared this fake. [image]
  • @jackbailey2 Jack Bailey on x
Elon Musk now retweeting and amplifying fake news from Britain First, an actual fascist hate group. This idea that Musk is a truth-seeking moderate is dead in the water and must be completely rejected.
  • @sundersays Sunder Katwala on x
Elon Musk is becoming a UK national security risk via irresponsible stewardship of X + personal conduct Nobody else alive did more in last 12 months to extend reach of groups/people (Patriotic Alternative, Britain First, Tommy) whose mission is to stir violent racial conflict
  • @jonathanpienews Jonathan Pie on x
Elon Musk reposted a screenshot of a fake Telegraph article (posted by the co-leader of Britain First), to his 193 million followers stating that Keir Starmer is considering setting up detainment camps. That's not free speech, it's being an irresponsible knee-jerking knobhead.

It's irresponsible for major organisations and MPs to be using this platform as their primary communication channel.

The far-right disinformation & lie machine in action. Fake news & headlines & far-right conspiracy theories spread around the world. All aided by Musk: someone who knows SFA abt the UK & cares not one jot abt people who live here.
  • @mij_europe Mujtaba Rahman on x
Can't see how UKG, and ultimately the EU for their own reasons, avoid taking action against Musk in light of the role he and X have played through these riots

Telegram has confirmed to me that it's removing calls for violence in the UK. “Moderators are actively monitoring the situation and are removing channels and posts containing calls to violence. Calls to violence are explicitly forbidden by Telegram's terms of service.” [image]

I would like to say that this letter should make your blood run cold, but that might be deemed whipping up hatred against easily-offended cold-blooded animals and I might be arrested. So I won't say that. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/...

Sadly unavoidable. And applicable even to the very richest social media owners. https://x.com/...

Following recent acts of violence in the UK, we're engaging with online services about their actions to prevent platforms being used to stir up hatred, provoke violence and other offences as a matter of urgency. 🔗 Read our open letter to them here: https://www.ofcom.org.uk/... [i…

NEW: Ofcom has issued a strong warning to social media companies to take immediate action against the spread of hate and violence on their platforms. The regulator says they should act now before regulations from Online Safety Act take effect. https://www.ofcom.org.uk/...
  • @sundersays Sunder Katwala on x
Ofcom have moved quickly to send a strongly worded letter about such things they might do should the letter be ignored
  • @plymouthcraig Craig Miles on x
The Government should bring forward the responsibilities under the Online Safety Act. Recall Parliament if needed to do this.
  • @davidheniguk David Henig on x
Social media will be regulated because that's ultimately the only way to stop the bad driving out the good. And yes it means developed countries have huge bodies of rules, but nobody's found a better way right now.
  • @pjdunleavy Patrick Dunleavy on x
“Strong warning” ha ha ha. Ofcom is headed by another far-right legitimation in Grade and has zero tools to control anything at all
  • @shayna620 Shayna on x
@martinabettt This means they don't want the people seeing what is really going on, so now they want social media to remove the mobs of masked men with weapons. I am not talking about the protesters either. Politicians are so pissed that we all get to see and hear the truth, they…
  • @mrmoosey1 Geoff on x
@martinabettt @Fox_Claire Anyone who doesn't believe they should is fucking crackers. This isn't about a few people sharing some odd views. This is an industry of hatred and wedge politics, of overwhelming proportions that threatens public safety, law and order.

If Elon Musk's mismanagement had not so radically degraded Twitter's reach and influence since he bought it, his disinformation campaigns on the platform would do much more harm. Rather considerate of him, if you think of it that way.
  • @albertonardelli Alberto Nardelli on x
Elon Musk shared a made up headline this morning posted by the co-leader of Britain First. He later deleted the post, after it racked up more than 1.5 million views. No such news article exists and the original post now has a community note. [image]

This is not protest, it is pure violence. We will have a standing army of public duty officers. We will ramp up criminal justice. We will apply criminal law online as well as offline. We will not tolerate attacks on mosques or on Muslim communities. [video]
  • @keir_starmer Keir Starmer on x
This is the swift action we're taking. If you provoke violent disorder on our streets or online, you will face the full force of the law.

.@Ofcom is now responsible for the regulation of sites like this in the UK. Just one problem. Ofcom's chair, a Tory appointment, has expressed enthusiasm for far right statements. Under his leadership, Ofcom's decisions have shown blatant rightwing bias. Starmer must sack him. [i…

The problem isn't X. It's Elon Musk: he invited the far-right back to Twitter, he's allowing them to incite rioting on here, and he's joining in himself. The authorities don't need to look at social media regulation. They should look to the man himself. https://inews.co.uk/... [i…
  • @aaronbastani Aaron Bastani on x
It's not his style but Starmer should savour a conflict with Elon Musk. Firstly, its great for building a global profile. Secondly, British voters don't want to be told what to think, or be told who they are, by a US billioniare. Embrace the conflict!
  • @mrjamesob James O'Brien on x
I think Musk bought Twitter because it had become a bulwark against the sort of racist lies that can help propel far right politicians to power. He was hoping to influence Western elections. No wonder he's got a problem with Keir Starmer.
  • @iandunt Ian Dunt on x
Elon Musk is, at this point, quite obviously an online far-right campaigner. Those are the accounts he interacts with and those are the messages he transmits. The fact he liked the previous prime minister and despises this one speaks very highly of Keir Starmer.

Pass a short Bill closing Twitter down in the U.K. @Keir_Starmer? There is more than enough reason to do so. One of the richest men in the world is using his platform to cause serious harm - putting lives & communities at risk. @YvetteCooperMP @lisanandy

Experience tracking internet censorship worldwide tells us that banning platforms like @X isn't the way to go. Limiting dialogue fuels conflict. Moreover, such calls cause untold harm to other countries where filternets are used daily to mask human rights violations at scale.
  • @adam_grant_bell Adam Bell on x
Posting on Twitter since the Musk takeover often feels like you're dipping your hands in filth, and his recent interventions in support of race war have only reinforced this feeling. But I don't think heading to other networks is the right answer. /1
