Twitch rolls out a revamped iOS and Android app, which now shows a TikTok-like feed of recommended content when it's opened, instead of a “Following” list

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitch first tested a discovery surface with a limited audience in 2023, then launched the feed as a separate mobile tab in May. Making it the opening experience is the consequential next step: recommendation moves from an optional destination to the app's default entry point.

The change follows a broader mobile-feed pattern, including Facebook's earlier split between a recommendation-led Home surface and a chronological following surface. Twitch is applying that product logic to live streams and clips, where discovery and established viewing habits can pull in different directions.

First-order effects

  • Mobile users now enter a recommended stream-and-clips feed rather than their followed-channel list, changing the first inventory Twitch presents on each app open.
  • Creators can gain exposure from recommendation even when a viewer does not follow them, while followed creators lose the prior default placement at launch.

Second-order effects

  • Twitch's ranking and content-format choices become more central to distribution; creators have a stronger incentive to produce clips and live moments that work in a fast-scrolling discovery context.
  • The move puts more pressure on Twitch to preserve easy access to followed channels, since the earlier experimental discovery feed had been introduced alongside, rather than in place of, the established following experience.

Third-order effects

  • If defaults continue to shift toward recommendations, creator-platform competition will increasingly turn on the quality and perceived fairness of distribution systems rather than the size of a creator's follower base alone.
  • The distinction between a social graph and an entertainment feed may keep weakening across mobile platforms, with chronological or follow-based views becoming secondary navigation rather than the primary home screen.

The trend: Twitch is part of the broader shift from follower-led app home screens to algorithmic, short-form-inspired discovery as the default distribution layer.

Honestly, this could be a great update assuming it's done right Advertisements cannot show on every stream change, otherwise it'll be near completely non-functional Streamer analytics need to be adjusted for mobile viewers, or a way to individually view pc/mobile. -

Agreed with others that the Following tab should still be the default. I don't want to launch into an autoplay session (imagine it's so with every launch, you get fed ads).

Honestly, I don't think I've seen any company other than X, truly truly ignore more customers than Twitch has regarding this horrible new app layout. For months, people complained. We have begged for them to put it back to easier to find, less clicking, less obnoxious, SIMPLER,

I might sound like a fanboy right here but I really love how Twitch shows effort in small things like this. Sure, they have a long way to go, but I'm rooting for this platform's longevity. Good job guys!

I have mixed opinions on the new update. It feels a lot like TikTok. Which is great for discovering new streamers and watching clips, but it's nice to open the app and see who you currently follow. That's how I mainly use the app. I'm not in the TikTok mentally of scrolling clips
