Twitch rolls out its TikTok-like discovery feed, launching as a tab within the Twitch iOS and Android apps, showing live streams and clips

Context & Ripple Effects

Twitch’s mobile discovery effort progressed from a limited experimental feed to a planned broader rollout that would combine clips and live streams. This launch puts that format into the main iOS and Android product as a dedicated tab.

The move is part of Twitch’s effort to make mobile browsing less dependent on already knowing whom to follow. A later mobile-app redesign would make recommended content even more prominent at launch.

First-order effects

  • Mobile Twitch users gain a scrollable destination for discovering live streams and clips, while creators have another in-app surface through which non-followers can encounter their content.
  • Twitch’s mobile app now allocates product real estate to recommendation-led viewing alongside its existing navigation and following-based experience.

Second-order effects

  • Creators’ short clips become more important as entry points to live streams, increasing the value of packaging highlights that can earn attention outside an established follower base.
  • Twitch must tune recommendations across two distinct formats—clips and live broadcasts—because weak matches could reduce the feed’s usefulness and divert attention from followed channels.

Third-order effects

  • If recommendation-led browsing becomes the default mobile behavior, live-streaming platforms may increasingly compete on their ability to turn short-form discovery into durable creator-audience relationships rather than on follower lists alone.
  • The later shift toward opening the app on recommended content suggests a broader structural move from subscription-style navigation to algorithmically curated distribution.

The trend: Twitch is joining the wider shift toward vertically browsable, recommendation-driven feeds as the front door for mobile media discovery.

The discovery feed is finally here: the quickest way to find content you love on Twitch. Preview dozens of live streams & clips without pre-roll ads to find something to watch in minutes. Update your Twitch mobile app to see the new Feed tab, rolling out to everyone this... [vide…

I'm not kidding when I say The user experience is better than TikTok. No weird store feature, and idk if it's cuz I have Turbo but I didn't see any ads Like every algorithm, it's gonna show you huge creators first, you have to tailor your experience a bit

I've had this feature enabled for a few months now. It's terrible. It actually ruins the twitch app. I can't believe they shipped it.

Many creators have talked about wanting something like this for years. This is just the start. Make it a goal to find someone new this week on the mobile app!

With TikTok becoming a less viable option for content creators, this is insanely good timing by twitch, and if well executed can be a great way for content creators to actually grow and audience on twitch 😁

Took years for them to catch up to YouTube and tiktok

Twitch launched its TikTok competitor a week after the US government's controversial ruling on the app. I tried it out. It's a little rough so far. My first few swipes were a professor's online course and a streamer getting attacked on the street. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

Is there a major social network that hasn't cloned TikTok?

There will be ads between content in your feed, but these ads will be scrollable, just like all feed content. We'll be experimenting with more changes to the feed, ads, and the mobile experience soon 👀 Learn more about the feed here: https://help.twitch.tv/... [video]
