Apple is launching new immersive video content for the Vision Pro over the next few months, including content from The Weeknd and the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend

Emma Roth / The Verge :

Context & Ripple Effects

Vision Pro launched with a roster of streaming and sports apps, including Disney+, ESPN, MLB, PGA, Max, and TikTok, establishing entertainment as a central use case rather than an add-on. Apple’s new slate builds on that launch-era streaming and sports lineup with programming designed for the headset’s immersive format.

The subsequent coverage points to a persistent content-supply challenge: Apple was later reported to be slow-walking immersive material filmed around Vision Pro’s launch. That makes high-profile music and live-sports programming important not just as marketing, but as evidence of whether premium immersive releases can become dependable.

First-order effects

  • Vision Pro owners gain new Apple-backed immersive programming tied to The Weeknd and the 2024 NBA All-Star Weekend, expanding the headset’s available premium viewing catalog.
  • Apple can use recognizable entertainment and sports franchises to demonstrate its immersive-video format to consumers and prospective content partners.

Second-order effects

  • Streaming, sports, and music-rights partners have a clearer reference point for the kinds of programming Apple is willing to feature on Vision Pro, raising pressure to evaluate spatial or immersive versions of premium releases.
  • A larger first-party catalog makes Vision Pro’s entertainment proposition less dependent on the third-party app availability announced at launch, though it does not resolve the need for a steady release cadence.

Third-order effects

  • If major entertainment franchises repeatedly receive immersive treatments, headset competition will increasingly hinge on access to distinctive production pipelines and rights, not hardware specifications alone.
  • The later report of delayed immersive releases suggests the format’s long-term constraint may be scalable production and distribution; regular programming, rather than isolated showcases, would determine whether it becomes a durable media category.

The trend: Spatial-computing platforms are trying to turn exclusive music, sports, and premium video into recurring reasons to use high-end headsets.

@NimaZeighami Most of this was actually announced already at WWDC, but interesting to see the new stuff nonetheless. https://www.uploadvr.com/...

immensely exciting and I can't wait to pore over all of these - but I do wonder whether we're not limiting ourselves by sticking to, essentially, movies that are immersive rides and animated postcards. Or maybe that's all the tech excels at. I hope not.

@NikiasMolina gaming is best on quest, but avp absolutely outperforms on immersion, both visual and audio. this should be really great

The NBA All-Star weekend was 5 months ago. Actually extremely bewildered/ extremely interested as to how/ why it'll take a few more months to get this ready. But I guess they're going to piggy back off the start of the season?
