“Sources: Apple will get an observer role on OpenAI's board, with Phil Schiller chosen for the position, as part of their partnership announced last month” Phil and the Microsoft observer will employ “rock, paper, scissors” when they disagree on strategy.

Look, Phil proved he can fly an airplane, surely he can do this, too

I'm starting to think it might be problematic for your CEO to have no stake in your business because it really feels like Apple and Microsoft have captured all the value and upside from OpenAI with relatively minimal spend (Azure credits aren't cash and Apple's given zero dollars…

OpenAI is trying to keep its consumer business alive and relevant-we don't know the compensation terms, but this is still a Hail Mary for them on distribution vs Google Gemini and Meta AI, and they're unhappy with the MSFT deal terms. …

So let me get this straight, Microsoft paid $10+bn to OpenAI and worked really hard to supply a ton of H100s so OAI can be on iOS and MacOS.  And now, Apple will have as much control on OAI as Microsoft?  Tim Cook, wow, just wow.👏👏👏

Microsoft cost for an OpenAI board observer role: ~$15B Apple cost for an OpenAI board observer role: $0 Jokes aside, this is pretty wild.

something i think about a lot is that, for all its kinda underwhelming-ness, the Uber tv show on Showtime (Super Pumped) absolutely nailed its portrayal of how ruthless tim cook is. hank azaria deserves a lot more credit than i'm sure he got for it.

The board observer role will put Apple on par with Microsoft, OpenAI's biggest backer and its main AI technology provider. But having Microsoft and Apple sit in on board meetings could create complications for the tech giants, who are major rivals.

The question is now whether regulators like the CMA will conclude Apple has “material influence” over OpenAI. And the fact of the matter is that Apple's control of access to most of the world's richest billion people gives them more power than the commodity that is cloud compute.

After all the money satya spent on being “below them, above them and around them”.... this is hilarious

Apple getting a non-voting OpenAI board seat for “free” while it took Microsoft $13 billion to get the same thing. This goes to show the power of being a gatekeeper. Since OpenAI can't pay Apple billions for placement like Google does with search, this is the next best thing [ima…

NEW: Apple will get a board observer seat at OpenAI later this year as part its partnership for Apple Intelligence. The person getting the seat: Phil Schiller, the head of the App Store and former marketing chief. https://www.bloomberg.com/...

@mgsiegler That's because Microsoft observer Dee Templeton is not an experienced pilot like Apple observer Phil Schiller.
