The board observer role will put Apple on par with Microsoft, OpenAI's biggest backer and its main AI technology provider. But having Microsoft and Apple sit in on board meetings could create complications for the tech giants, who are major rivals.

The question is now whether regulators like the CMA will conclude Apple has “material influence” over OpenAI. And the fact of the matter is that Apple's control of access to most of the world's richest billion people gives them more power than the commodity that is cloud compute.
