Microsoft pushes back Windows 7 and 8 on Skylake support cut-off date from 2017 to 2018

Microsoft is clarifying and softening a bit its stance on how long and thoroughly it will support Windows 7 and 8 users who want to run those operating systems on Intel Skylake-based devices.

In mid-January, Microsoft announced that new CPUs would require Windows 10, with only a short list of preferred devices allowed to run older Windows versions — and even those for just 18 months. The move effectively made Skylake the last Intel generation fully usable with Windows 7 and 8, putting enterprise buyers mid-refresh-cycle in a bind.

Two months later, Microsoft is walking part of that back: the Skylake cut-off for Windows 7 and 8 moves from 2017 to 2018, giving organizations another year before newer silicon locks them out of legacy Windows. The concession matters because Windows 7 still anchors a large share of corporate desktops, and Microsoft's own later timeline — end of Windows 7 support in January 2020 — leaves little slack after this extension runs out.
