Microsoft is ending its longstanding practice of supporting any Windows version on any CPU: from now on, new processors require Windows 10, while a short list of 'preferred devices' gets a grace period of just 18 months on older versions. The move lands mid-way through the Windows 10 free-upgrade push, when enterprise fleets were still largely on Windows 7 and 8.1.

The policy immediately drew resistance — Microsoft later pushed the Skylake support cut-off for Windows 7 and 8 back from 2017 to 2018 — before being enforced in earnest a year later, when Intel's Kaby Lake and AMD's Ryzen chips were confirmed locked to the latest Windows version.

First-order effects

  • Enterprises buying new PCs with current-generation Intel and AMD silicon can no longer run Windows 7 or 8.1 with full support, forcing a choice between Windows 10 migration or the 18-month preferred-device window.
