The US Senate passes the ByteDance-TikTok divestment bill by 79-18, after the House passed the bill on April 20; President Biden signs the bill into law

A bill that would force China-based company Bytedance to sell TikTok — or else face a US ban of the platform — is all but certain …

TikTok is a risk and should be divested to a domestic company.  Also... Kids are smarter than you think they are and are less likely to be influenced by the “propaganda” they find on CCP TikTok than your parents were by US-based F*x News.  Ok.  There's my hot take for the evening…

I can't emphasis enough how often I've heard from TikTok/ByteDance employees over the years that the company will never divest like this.  Rock meet hard place https://www.theverge.com/...

Meta spent a record $7.6 million on lobbying in Q1 this year, coincidentally, at the same time the House voted to ban TikTok, it's chief competitor.  —  There are no coincidences when it comes to corporate lobbying.

The TikTok bill is unconstitutional. The First Amendment means the government can't restrict Americans' access to ideas, information, or media from abroad without a very good reason for it—and no such reason exists here. (1/x)

An interesting wrinkle to the TikTok bill: it doesn't require that ByteDance sell it off to an American company, only that it doesn't go to one “controlled” by a “foreign adversary” But the White House this week suggested that's the desired outcome: https://www.washingtonpost.com…

I hope that TikTok remains available in the US and I also think that, on the whole, we'd be better off without it. I also feel this way about Coca-Cola and casinos.

NEWS The Senate has passed the bill which contains the TikTok divesture. Bytedance, TikTok's parent company, will now have one year to sell it or TikTok could be banned in the United States. The Chinese government will have to approve the sale. President Biden has already...

Senate passes the TikTok divest-or-ban bill. It's off to President Joe Biden, who has previously said he'd quickly sign the legislation.

BREAKING: Bill to force TikTok to divest its US operation passed 79-18 in Senate and just needs Biden's signature. After India's TikTok ban, this is an all out war against Chinese consumer software, with 2 of the biggest markets gone. Are truly global social apps dead? [image]

President Biden has already issued a statement saying he plans to sign this into law tomorrow, which would start the initial 270-day window for TikTok to divest 270 days from tomorrow (date of enactment) would be... Jan. 19, a day before inauguration day https://twitter.com/...

79-18: The U.S. Senate approves a $95 billion foreign aid package for Israel, Ukraine, and Taiwan. The bill also requires TikTok to divest from Chinese parent company ByteDance within nine months or face a U.S. ban. [video]

I can't begin to state the ways this is a horrific decision for labor, entertainment, and information in the United States. This will impact the financial livelihoods of hundreds of thousands Americans.

News — After months of battles exposing a deep rift within the GOP, the Senate gave final approval to a $95.3 billion aid package for Ukraine, Israel and Taiwan. The measure, which also includes a plan that could ban TikTok, now heads to President Biden's desk. Final vote: 79-18

Even as someone who's barely been using TikTok at all, I'm no less convinced that the banning/divesting of TikTok seems like a terrible idea for free speech and free enterprise.

A TikTok ban is about to pass the Senate.  Can it withstand a First Amendment challenge?  I spoke to three constitutional scholars, and everyone agreed the outcome is extremely hard to predict https://www.platformer.news/ ...  [image]
