Canva acquires Affinity, popular with Mac users for its photo editing and other tools, to take on Adobe, Canva's COO says for “several hundred million pounds”

- Australian unicorn buys British team behind Affinity art suite  — Affinity offers alternative tools to Adobe's flagship products

Bloomberg Olivia Poh

Context & Ripple Effects

Canva had already used acquisitions to broaden its design offering, including purchases of visual-AI and e-commerce design startups as it scaled its online service. Affinity adds a British maker of photo-editing and other creative tools with a user base distinct from Canva’s core positioning.

The deal puts Canva more directly alongside Adobe in professional creative software. Subsequent commitments to preserve Affinity’s perpetual licenses made pricing and product continuity central to how the acquisition would be judged.

First-order effects

  • Canva gains Affinity’s art-suite team and products, extending its portfolio into tools positioned as alternatives to Adobe’s flagship creative applications.
  • Affinity users immediately face a new owner; Canva’s stated post-deal pledge centers on keeping the software fair, transparent, affordable, and available through perpetual licenses.

Second-order effects

  • Adobe faces a better-capitalized challenger with both Canva’s broad design platform and Affinity’s established creative-tool portfolio, raising the importance of retaining users across different design workflows.
  • Canva must balance cross-product integration against the trust of Affinity’s existing customers, for whom license terms and product independence are material buying criteria.

Third-order effects

  • The acquisition is evidence that design-software competition is broadening from individual applications toward portfolios that span casual creation, professional editing, and AI-enabled workflows.
  • If Canva preserves distinct purchasing options while expanding capabilities, perpetual licensing could remain a meaningful point of differentiation against subscription-led creative software; execution will determine whether that advantage endures.

The trend: Creative-software vendors are consolidating complementary tools to compete through broader workflow ownership rather than single-product feature parity.

This should be fun. Canva built a product for a market Adobe didn't really serve, which is what got it to some half a billion dollars in quarterly revenue and a $25bn valuation. But Adobe's core base of professionals remained untouched, till now.

Yep Canva is going to turn the Affinity suite into a bunch of AI slop-riddled, mini-Adobe subscription-requiring mess that will betray the entire essence of what made the Affinity suite so great Mark my words It was nice knowing you when you were still independent...
