Sony plans to lay off around 900 employees, or 8% of its global workforce, at its PlayStation division, and will close PlayStation's London Studio

read the full email employees received about it Willa Rowe / Kotaku : PlayStation Cancels Multiple Games Amid Massive Job Cuts Tom Gerken / BBC : PlayStation to axe 900 jobs and close London Studio Alex Weprin / The Hollywood Reporter : Sony Lays Off 900 Employees in Gaming Division Aisha Malik / TechCrunch : Sony is laying off 900 employees from its PlayStation unit Jennifer Maas / Variety : PlayStation to Lay Off 900 Employees, or 8% of Workforce Jason Schreier / Bloomberg : Sony says its PlayStation layoffs will also impact game makers Insomniac, Naughty Dog, and Guerrilla, three of its most successful subsidiaries Mastodon: Charles Randall / @charlesrandall@grumble.social : I can no longer see these layoffs as anything but a coordinated campaign by capital to intimidate workers into taking worse deals.  There is no rational reason for them; they are going to hurt every company in the short to medium term.  —  If you aren't organizing your workplace you are a naive idiot. … Aida Akl / @AAKL@noc.social : Studios affected: Insomniac Games, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla Games, and Firesprite.  Insomniac, in particular, is having a bad year.  —  According to analysts, Sony has had a “near decade low games margin — suggesting that the cost of making games is eating into Sony's gaming margins.” … X: @dylancuthbert : Very sorry to hear about the worldwide layoffs at PlayStation. A lot of people will be hitting an already flooded job market. Q-Games is always looking for talented engineers and artists to join us in Kyoto (a lovely relaxing place to live). @snazzylabs : Over-hiring is not the consequence of changing macroeconomic issues—it's a mismanagement issue. Layoffs should always be paired with c-suite replacement or compensation cuts, but they never are. Jon Cartwright / @joncomms : It never ends London Studio completely closing too. They're slowing losing all their UK based studios. Already lost those behind Wipeout and Lemmings - now Singstar and Eyetoy legacy gone Hopefully Media Molecule have a strong future @colteastwood : I think the biggest challenge in the Industry causing razor thin profits & layoffs is the jump to 6 year development sustaining Game Studios. Shifting to AA budgets & scope may what everyone needs in this difficult time. Indie vs AAA no longer matters if the game is awesome! Samantha Nye / @thesamethyst : Supermassive and Die Gut Fabrik yesterday, Sony today. This industry is bleeding and saying it's heartbreaking is an understatement. So many people losing their livelihoods. So much creative talent having the passion drained from them and replaced with fear. This sucks. @horrorvisuals : I remember promoting Firesprite's “The Persistence” before they were acquired by Sony. I remember how happy they were after the news got out. And I remember being so happy for them. Now look at this. [image] @majornelson : Another terrible day for the games industry. 😢 @broodwars64 : The only thing surprising about these PlayStation layoffs is that Media Molecule, one of Sony's most consistently worthless studios, completely avoided the axe while studios who actually release games got completely shut down. Kyle Snape / @kylemsnape : It is so extremely telling that the AAA games industry isn't in a good place when Sony themselves have to announce their layoffs. This type of game development is quickly becoming unsustainable and something has to change. Jimmy Rowe / @jimmyrowe1994 : There's a separate tweet where they confirm London Studio is dead, and Firesprite, Guerrilla, Naughty Dog and even Insomniac Games will all face layoffs. Fucking idiots. Recently I've suggested Arrowhead would be acquired by Sony. If I were them I'd tell them to fuck off. Oliver Darko / @oliver_drk : Supermassive Games released Until Dawn almost a decade ago. Since then they developed 12(!) other titles and got acquired by Danish investment firm Nordisk. That people wrongly blame Sony for unrelated layoffs shows that Supermassive wasn't able to establish their own identity. @welladjustednrd : @Wario64 How does a company who sells as many games and systems as this have to layoff so many employees? Well, SONY the parent companies poor decisions. Madame Webb, poor electronic sales, hemorrhaging costs on games, bad leadership. @whoregreymon : Outrageous that even three of the most successful and acclaimed AAA studios under Sony can't avoid layoffs. Eoghan / @leglessgamer : Not only is 900 employees a horrifically big layoff, but London Studio closing is tragic. That studio means the world to me, and since I was 7 years old, it's been my dream to work for them. This is Sony closing another one of its most creative and innovative studios. @ethangach : Sony announces 900 layoffs across PlayStation. Confirms several PlayStation studios are impacted. The Verge Tom Warren

Context & Ripple Effects

Sony’s announcement extends the cuts beyond headquarters to key development teams: related coverage says Insomniac, Naughty Dog, Guerrilla, and Firesprite are affected, while London Studio is being shut down entirely. The accompanying reports of multiple game cancellations make this a portfolio reset as well as a headcount reduction.

It arrives after Epic’s 2023 workforce reduction and divestitures, another example of a major game company cutting costs while narrowing its set of internal bets. The significance is the concentration of those choices at a platform holder whose studios supply differentiated content.

First-order effects

  • About 900 PlayStation employees face layoffs, and London Studio’s closure ends its internal development operation.
  • Affected studios must absorb smaller teams alongside canceled projects, disrupting the people and production plans attached to those games.

Second-order effects

  • PlayStation will have a narrower near-term slate of internally developed titles, increasing the importance of prioritizing remaining projects and external publishing relationships.
  • Competing publishers and platform owners face added pressure to show that high-cost studio networks can sustain releases; experienced displaced developers also become available to other studios.

Third-order effects

  • If comparable cuts persist, console gaming may concentrate investment in fewer, lower-risk franchises and teams, raising the strategic cost of maintaining a broad first-party studio portfolio.
  • The outcome is not predetermined: reducing projects can improve focus, but repeated cancellations can also weaken the pipeline of new intellectual property that platform exclusives depend on.

The trend: Large game-platform owners are reassessing the cost and scope of first-party development, trading broader project portfolios for tighter capital and staffing discipline.
