OpenAI unveils Sora, its first text-to-video model, which can create up to a minute of 1080p video, as a research product for some creators and security experts

OpenAI's entry into generative AI video is an impressive first step.  —  We already know that OpenAI's chatbots can pass the bar exam without going to law school.

All the Sora (and previously Runway, etc) AI video work is no doubt impressive but I just don't buy the “artists / creatives are screwed” narrative.  How?  When fully baked, sure, this moves the stack around and no doubt makes certain tasks easier.  But it's still just a tool.  I…

this is obviously some wild shit.  i am also fascinated by how it takes the midjourney aesthetic a step further.  just so interesting how it generates video that's somehow realer than real and sharper than reality

One thing Sora will absolutely destroy is short-form clips for fun.  It might take a while for AI to replace a full, propely made long-form YouTube video, but you bet your ass it will be able to make an infinite number of cat/dog/baby/whatever videos that are impossible to differ…

Sora is fantastic, but it is akin to morphing and splicing, rather than a path to the physical reasoning we would need for AGI. And it is no world model, even with terabytes of data. We will see more systemic glitches as more people have access. Many will be hard to remedy.

The announcement of Sora has some people asking if we'll also soon see games designed by prompt. Games are trickier than text or video because there isn't an open and large corpus of video game content that is well labeled that can be used to train AIs.

Of the OpenAI Sora videos, this one blew my mind. Rendering this scene via a classic renderer is very hard. Sora doesn't model physics the way we do. It can definitely still get it wrong, but I wouldn't have predicted it'd be this convincing. https://openai.com/sora [video]
