Sources: the US DOJ may file an antitrust lawsuit against Apple that targets the company's strategies to protect the dominance of the iPhone as soon as H1 2024

Justice Department officials are in the late stages of investigating the iPhone maker, focusing on how Apple has used …

To list two other things: They frequently try to fuck with our app store releases (I'm a mobile engineer, we have somewhat frequent SEVs of apple refusing to let us update the app store version for some bullshit reason or another. …
  • @lemayzing42 Michael LeMay on threads
They have managed, through great PR work, to brand their efforts to suppress competitors as “pro-privacy”, despite not actually caring much about user privacy (they treat their own ads very differently and they sell in China).  They wanted to extort money out of Meta, they failed…
  • @lemayzing42 Michael LeMay on threads
The explanation is simple.  Meta has almost the opposite culture to Apple.  We build free (imo bad) products that is available to everyone except the Chinese, because we wouldn't compromise on principles.  Apple builds an expensive and great product that is available everywhere, …
  • @nick_poitier Nick Poitier on threads
My gosh, a coordinated attack on Apple?  I am clutching my pearls!  Considering the years Apple spent trying to destroy Facebook/Meta through its own cloak-and-dagger games, quite successfully harming Facebook and distracting everyone from its own malfeasance, I can't say I have …
  • @d.13.go @d.13.go on threads
It's tribalism.  It's a ‘my shit is better than your shit’ mindset that people can't let go of.  It goes back to the PC vs MAC days when PC was better because “reasons”.
  • @danhon Dan Hon on threads
So this is LinkedIn for Meta now or what
  • @thebrianpenny Brian Penny on threads
Culture always starts at the top and is modeled for everyone else.  Most of the cool kids here are either current/former Meta employees and their friends.  TL;DR this place is filled with Meta tech bro culture.
  • @crankyelephant Rajat Soni on threads
I'm hear on Threads being a goof but I will never say one nice thing about Mark Zuckerberg because he's just an immensely trivial and weird sociopath.  My feeling on Apple is that they are a closed, smug nasty little garden of delights.
  • @crankyelephant Rajat Soni on threads
100% agree.  I like Apple fine.  It's good enough.  It could be better, but whatever.  I like that my watch computer and phone talk to each other.  It's easy on my smooth brain.  A lot of this feels like a tech fight that doesn't really benefit the vast majority of the public so …

Every social algorithm favors status (follower count, engagement of prior posts, etc.) much much much more than age.  For that to be true Meta would have to be tipping the scales, which seems pointlessly unethical and easy to catch.
  • @dariusz.dziuk Dariusz Dziuk on threads
Or perhaps on the virtue of being early and internal adopters this platform signal boosts Meta employees much more.  It feels like an echo chamber because it is one
  • @joshwolf @joshwolf on threads
If you have an iPhone, Apple pushes you into iMessage.  You can technically do without it, but you're basically handing over your messaging to it unless you make an effort not to.  You immediately get the nice blue bubble, inline reactions, threading, and other “nice” things that…
  • @thebrianpenny Brian Penny on threads
It's not just meta—there's also a noticeable presence of Microsoft employees here.  They all seem to be friends and very very few of them label themselves as meta/microsoft employees.
  • @mhlakhani Hasnain Lakhani on threads
Meta always had a really healthy and active internal discussion forum but people were aggressively told to never speak about the company in public when I was there.  I wonder what's changed since I left - threads seems to mirror the internal workplace discussion at times
  • @sincera.7 Brad McAuley on threads
Meta employees are probably both overrepresented and on average have a larger network of actual ‘friends’ on this app.  Definitely amongst tech threads.  So more content being produced and higher engagement for content on average.  Probably not a is_meta_employee flag boosting co…
  • @katienotopoulos Katie Notopoulos on threads
I think the “coordinated” element isn't probably like, masterminded or whatever.  But for former Twitter users... we aren't used to seeing a whole bunch of Meta employees speak their minds/be openly critical of other tech companies like, en masse.  This is feels new and uh, stran…
  • @samstrongtalks Sam on threads
Fundamentally, I don't think giving people the choice to say “no” to being monitored in every app and website they visit is a problem.  The fact that Meta happens to be disproportionately hurt by this says more about what people think of their business model than about Apple givi…
  • @parkert Parker Thompson on threads
PSA, because I've seen this a lot, “but your company benefits from fixing this problem” is not a rebuttal to the argument “this thing is a problem.”  We can also criticize Meta for many things.  Feel free.  They just happen to be right on this one and the lack of substantive enga…
  • @mstahl302 Mark Stahl on threads
Really?  Just Meta?  The EU has been critical of Apple iMessage for months.  From what I can see, the latest wave of criticism was triggered by a third party company that tried to stealthily integrate with iMessage and got shut down hard by Apple.  This got a lot of tech press, w…
  • @joshwolf @joshwolf on threads
No, it doesn't refute anything.  You churn up a bunch of bogus “organic” chatter about a topic (note, most Meta employees talking about it are just talking about Apple as if they were anyone else interested in tech), get it trending, and of course the larger content ecosystem cat…
  • @darkzuckerberg Steven Ojo on threads
I don't think it's coordinated, I think it's just very likely that: 1)a lot of meta employees and former meta employees use this app 2) a lot of them have worked or work on features directly impacted by Apple's practices and have had to work hard to compete with them 3) …
  • @mstahl302 Mark Stahl on threads
Social media is often about waves.  Waves against Apple.  Now waves against Meta employees for criticizing Apple.  Waves are a daily event in social media.  They don't require a conspiracy.  Just an aggressive algorithm that amplifies viral content and a lot of bored, opinionated…
  • @mstahl302 Mark Stahl on threads
The problem with the second statement is that, if (1) is true, as you concede it might be, then seeing Meta tech bloggers (or any other tech bloggers) jumping on that bandwagon against Apple does not require any coordination.  It's just the social ecosystem at work.  As is the hu…
  • @joshwolf @joshwolf on threads
Two things can be true at the same time: 1) Apple engages in some sus behavior around consumer lock-in cross-promoting products 2) Meta employees seem to be engaging in a coordinated act of corporate brigading against Apple on their own platform, often failing to disclose their e…

Lets say this lawsuit happens and Apple has to open up their platforms, imo unlikely I think users would choose Apples hardware and services over others offered unless forced to use others I'd use Apple Pay over Amex Pay for example, unless Amex forces it for access to payments
  • @tech_oversight @tech_oversight on x
.@Apple abuses its market power to cut off innovative new products, deny consumers choice, and pad its profits. In this equation, it's consumers who lose. We applaud the DOJ for taking steps to hold tech monopolies accountable for predatory practices. https://www.nytimes.com/...
  • @modestproposal1 @modestproposal1 on x
What's interesting here is how expansive this is. Basically an attack on the entire integrated, closed system that Apple builds and operates. Ancillary devices, payments, everything. (tho no mention of the App Store, presumably cause of other litigation?) https://www.nytimes.com/…
  • @adamkovac Adam Kovacevich on x
This reads like DOJ staking out a demand that Apple implement all of its EU Digital Markets Act concessions in the US too. Of course, that's not how US antitrust law works. Congress *rejected* AICOA, the US version of Digital Markets Act. [image]

.@JusticeATR Kanter is taking on Big Tech! Corporate monopolies like Apple abuse their market power to squash competitors, raise prices, and boost profits. This is a powerfully important reminder to fully fund antitrust law enforcement.

Apple really has a knack for timing. To show their monopoly abuse muscles on the day that this story breaks you must rest so securely in the belief that you're untouchable. Capone would tip his hat.
