In the coming world of mass data processing, human dignity will be defended not only by #GDPR but also by a specialized act. The AI Act includes risk analysis, restrictions on the use of biometric systems by the police, option of complaints, fines up to €35M, or 7% turnover. [ima…

The new EU/AI Act - looks horrifically unworkable and a minefield for punitive fines. It seems these things are mostly targeted at companies & people. Plenty of exemptions for police, security, governments etc. Why am I not surprised? https://www.europarl.europa.eu/ ...

The EU has passed the AI Act — another set of rules that let them fine US big tech companies since there aren't any European ones.  The law will require foundation models, including GPT & Gemini, to comply with transparency obligations before they are released to the public. …

I'm not saying the regulations or the intent behind them is bad.  Just that it's notable that the EU's approach to tech these days is primarily how to restrict its use and fine American (and increasingly Chinese) tech companies.  Over time this mindset and approach will lead to a…

It's interesting to note the EU is now using regulation to opt out of the benefits of the technology industry as other economies like the United States and China are racing headlong to capitalize on it.  Over the past few years EU regulators have been working tirelessly to find w…

Progress on legal frameworks around AI safeguards is being made.  The EU now has a political agreement around their framework, and is now expected to make it law early next year.  —  “...threatens stiff financial penalties for violations...7% of a company's global turnover.” …

Historic! The EU becomes the very first continent to set clear rules for the use of AI 🇪🇺 The #AIAct is much more than a rulebook — it's a launchpad for EU startups and researchers to lead the global AI race. The best is yet to come! 👍 [video]
  • @vonderleyen Ursula von der Leyen on x
The 🇪🇺 AI Act is a global first. A unique legal framework for the development of AI you can trust. And for the safety and fundamental rights of people and businesses. A commitment we took in our political guidelines - and we delivered. I welcome today's political agreement.

Victory lap for a politically compromised regulatory regime hashed out in smoke-filled room no one has actually seen that optimizes to “do something “/be first (and failed even to be first). Yay Europe! #sticktowineandcheese

Welp gl France let's see if this works

Europeans treat regulating things like its some kind of accomplishment and that really tells you everything you need to know about the continent
  • @maxhodak_ Max Hodak on x
i love europe but everyone's intuitions right now are seriously under-rating the fact that europe doesn't actually make almost anything anymore their modern life is completely dependent on other powers, and this is eventually going to cause real problems
  • @ashleevance Ashlee Vance on x
Think I've been to as many European start-ups as just about anyone on the planet. There's a weird psychological limiter on start-up ambitions that is not helped by universities or governments
  • @micsolana Mike Solana on x
great, now all they have to do is actually build something

Did the EU not learn any lessons from missing out on the previous decade of technological driven economic growth
  • @martin_casado @martin_casado on x
Europe is a funny place. It worked very hard to lay the foundation modern science and engineering over the last 300 years. And now when given a real chance to be a leader again, is working just has hard to slip into irrelevancy.

The EU has finalised the AI Act after days of deliberations - it does not include foundation models (these underpin chatbots) - doesn't ban emotional recognition systems, despite inaccuracy issues - focuses on high risk systems https://www.bbc.com/...

You have to realize there's a demoralized core of European engineers... All stuck behind this Great Wall of European nostalgia, an attempt to freeze the clock, as vitality seeps away from what once birthed the Enlightenment

@ThierryBreton ... Begging Europe to continue regulating yourselves so American can win 💪
  • @axelvossmdep Axel Voss MdEP on x
@EPPGroup But let's be clear: we tried to make the best out of an unworkable approach to #AI. We are still NOT convinced that this is the right way to make sure Europe stays competitive in AI. Innovation will still take place elsewhere. Here, we missed our shot.
  • @edwinhayward Edwin Hayward on x
The EU set out the world's first comprehensive rules governing the development and use of AI. Only time will tell if they've made the right choices, but it positions them well in the race to further AI, because established players and startups have a clear framework to work to.
  • @klyngec Casper Klynge on x
PoW: Jury still very much out on whether the EU managed to sweetspot the first ever binding AI regulation or whether this will stifle innovation in Europe. One thing clear though: Compliance requirements will be major challenge for the backbone of Europe's economy: The SME's.

The result is remarkable, but the journey will still be long. As academics, we have months and years ahead to delve deeper into the #AIAct and help make this outcome of a compromise political agreement a key element of EU digital society regulation.

#AIAct trilogue: it's a wrap! After 36 hours of intense negotiations, EU policymakers have reached a provisional deal on the world's first AI law. Much technical work remains, and it might take weeks to consolidate the text. More details to follow on the political agreement.
  • @axelvossmdep Axel Voss MdEP on x
We have a deal on the #AIAct! ✅ After years of work and sleepless nights of negotiations, the EU finishes the first global landmark regulation on #AI. This is a huge step for the EU and for fundamental rights.
