As Beeper Mini experiences an outage, Beeper CEO Eric Migicovsky says that “all data indicates” Apple found a way to cut off the app's ability to function

Was it too good to be true?  Beeper, the startup that reverse-engineered iMessage to bring blue bubble texts to Android users …

color me shocked that one of the world's most powerful and richest companies clearly poured its resources into killing a threat to the crown jewel of its services 🙃

next time I reverse engineer a highly proprietary protocol of a very big powerful company that won't like it I'm not going to be as over confident

I think it would be irresponsible if they weren't clear about exactly what the are doing.  Look, if Apple can close the mechanism that allows this to work, that's fine.  That's how reverse-engineering works.  But they'll likely need to balance that with the millions of paying App…

Back in May I got into the Beeper beta.  When I learned they required me to give them my Apple ID username and password, and they wouldn't accept an app specific password, I noped out of there.  To insert themselves into this architectural diagram they either need to break the se…

My prediction is that Apple will make changes—fixing bugs and/or closing loopholes—that break Beeper Mini.  It's untenable that there's unsanctioned client software for a messaging platform for which privacy and security are a primary feature.  It's a very nice app, remarkably cl…

If Apple make any changes to iMessage architecture they'll have to choose between breaking iMessage for every iOS device no longer getting updates, or updating all those out of support devices.  Since Beeper Mini is following the protocol and encrypting everything on device, how …

Beeper Mini, an Android app which charged people for the ability to send message iPhone users via iMessage has stopped working.  It looks like Apple has closed whatever loophole they used to build interoperability with iMessage.  This is totally predictable to anyone who lived th…

Amazing how fast a big company can move when they're fixing a thing that's important to them, rather than important to you.  You want fast action from Apple, Nintendo, Google, whoever; make a thing that circumvents something they consider important and there's none of this “silen…

Apple already killed Beeper Mini. That was fast. Wonder if they will figure out a way to come back and how many times Apple will be able to shut them down.

@SnazzyLabs The biggest problem when Apple makes moves like this is that no one trusts their motives anymore. Apple has always been strict at locking things down, but in the past, they did it for the purpose of preserving the best possible ‘walled garden’. The walled garden no lo…

At least everybody can cancel before the end of their free trial. 😂 I think it took everyone by surprise (including Beeper) how quickly Apple shut this down. Talking to them, they had a lot of other ways to keep Beeper Mini up, but a business can't be based on “cat-and-mouse.”

The only surprise here is why anyone would use yet another iMessage-for-Android hack where it was totally clear that Apple would find a way to pull the plug

As expected, looks like Apple killed Beeper Mini. All this iMessage stuff is a waste of time. Apple does not want Android users to use it. You will be shut down. But hey this one lasted like twice as long as Sunbird! https://techcrunch.com/...

  • @matthew_d_green Matthew Green on x
I don't want to be glib about this. Interoperability and third party clients would be very good for iMessage. I just don't think you're going to achieve this through a few clever hacks.
  • @johnwilson @johnwilson on x
@Techmeme @SarahPerezTC Lmao. Ya think? It's a huge security risk to have E2E messages running through an unofficial third party client. And I have no clue why The Verge and other tech media wouldn't say as much. Absurd and unprofessional.
  • @harrymccracken Harry McCracken on x
The whole idea of unauthorized Android support for iMessage reminds me of Palm's idiosyncratic attempts circa 2009 to commandeer iTunes. Here's an image I created back then of a Palm Pre tilting at a windmill. [image]
