The EU lists the 22 services falling under the Digital Markets Act, including TikTok and Facebook, and will assess if Microsoft's services and iMessage qualify

- Tech firms set to challenge EU in digital antitrust clampdown  — Apple's App Store, Google Search, Amazon marketplace on list

The EU has listed the initial set of companies and products that qualify as gatekeepers under the digital markets act (DMA).  The DMA triggers automatic antitrust style remedies on companies that have 45 million EU users and €7.5 billion in revenue or €75 billion in market cap. …

Instead of fighting antitrust lawsuits one by one, the EU's philosophy is now that a particular level of business success is automatically a gatekeeper/monopoly and should trigger antitrust style enforcement.  More details below in this article by @verge

Apple says iMessage doesn't meet the 45m EU MAU threshold to be covered by the DSA, which is interesting, but not actually surprising given WhatsApp completely owns that market. https://www.ft.com/...

The most surprising thing about this list is the decision to exempt Gmail and Outlook from designation, despite both meeting the DMA's thresholds. Their sheer ubiquity surely gives Google/Microsoft plenty of opportunities to self-preference their own services and ecosystems... [i…

Well, I guess that explains why it feels like the @EU_Commission is at war with US Tech. The Administration and industry should be prepared to play hardball ... because Brussels is.

Microsoft's Windows OS is on the EU's list for strict new DMA rules. It means we're going to see changes to Windows in the coming months in EU markets. Microsoft is trying to keep Bing, Edge, and its ad business off the list https://www.theverge.com/...

I believe the DMA endgame will be Apple and Google acquiescing to open stores and payments, but working desperately to kneecap real competition and keep the Apple Tax and Google Tax in place - to prevent price competition from undermining their unearned monopoly profit streams.

We now know which core platform services will have to comply with the DMA's dos and don'ts. Nothing groundbreaking here. We already knew which firms were candidates, and the designated services are largely those you would expect. Here are some implications from today's news 🧵

The Europeans really called it D-Day. Targeting American firms for a shakedown and making a joke about the American-led liberation of Europe. These might not be good people.

Not a single European company designated a gatekeeper under EU's Digital Markets Act. This is exactly the protectionist regulation that the Biden Administration warned that it was.

Congrats to the #DMAteam, today you have achieved a great result! Looking forward for the next steps (rebuttals, qualitative assessments art 3(8) etc) Dear GKs, now it's your turn! 💪🏻

Sad commentary on the state of Europe's tech ecosystem. No company even comes close to meeting the threshold of gatekeeper status. And with regulations like this, no incentive for any EU company to aspire to be a real competitor to these six. Self-defeating move by Brussels.

So many “monopolies” we have to name them in sets of six.

Big day for Big Tech. These are the guys subject to new rules to shackle their powerful platforms. There will be lawsuits on 2 months...and plenty of changes to the platforms in 6 months.
